Bacteria in folders

Life is too short to worry about this kind of stuff imo. Just keep your blade clean and I dont see any huge risks. You have more risks getting sick from the food being contaminated before hand anyways

I use a cheap dollar store knife for food prep, the ones with the black plastic handles. It goes in my mess kit whenever I'm out and that serves me fine and is easy to clean. Why people insist of preparing food with their outdoor knives I will never understand but whatever its your choice and its your health.

Outdoors are just alive with bacteria. They surround you from both outside and from inside... Folding knife is probably one of the least of your problems if and when you go hiking. Seriously.

I would worry as much about bio burden growing inside of a sheath as much as in my folder. Soap and water work great for fixed blade or folder. A quick swipe of the blade with an alcohol wipe prior to use is effective. Compressed air doesn't kill anything. Working in the bulk pharmaceutical industry I get to deal with controlling microbial growth daily. More than likely the food your're going to eat has more microbes growing on it than your dirty knife blade. If you were injecting your food into your body you would have a lot more to worry about. It's funny, through recombinat DNA technology, E coli has been a great friend to the human race!

So IV injection of food is out? They do it in the hospital every day.

E coli has been a great friend to the human race!! :D

I'll remember that one for my wife next time she walks in the restroom after I've been....resting!! :D :D

IV injection of food is out, but not the IV injection of steel and germs. What if you cut yourself? consider this; you are camping with a bunch of boy scouts, and you let one of them borrow your knife (your damascus large sebenza ;)) and due to its unexpected sharpness the kid gets a nasty cut that requires stitches, but you are in the middle of nowhere.
A little far fetched, as I don't think many of us are scout leaders, but still.

Like I'd let one of the little miscreants handle my Damascus blade....lol That's what 1st ad kits are for. Alcohol wipe, neosporin and a bandaid will take care of him. :D

That's why I use fixed blades and boil water. ;)

You can drop the whole knife in the water for like 5 mins then take it out, dry it off and not have to worry about rust, internal parts and all that other stuff.

Simple, easy and quick.

Or if you are in a Camp Site that has restrooms etc you can take some dish soap and wash the fixed blade (the whole knife) like at home in seconds and you are ready to go not having to worry about things like above.

Folders are not best suited for food and the outdoors a small thin 3 to 4" FB is much better all the way around and in every way.

Actually, folders aren't best suited for anything. About the only thing they're good for is life in the big city, where walking around with a fixed blade on your belt would cause some problems. Outdoors, you're a fool not to go with a fixed blade, though. They're better at everything.

I agree 1 Million percent.

I was just trying to be nice for those who are trying to find a reason to use (Play with) their folders........ ;)

I don't think th OP was asking about hospitals.

E Coli is fermented to begin the process of manufacturing the greatest life saving medicine ever....insulin.

I've used folding knives for everything from food prep to minor surgery. Whenever you cut meat you need to clean the knife thoroughly afterwards, especially if it has serrations. NEVER USE BLEACH. Bleach is a strong oxidizer that can corrode stainless steel. Try to clean the knife immediately after use before folding it if at all possible. Wipe, rinse with water, rinse with alcohol, wipe again. That should do it.

I think you are being overly paranoid, people these days are so worried about bacteria and the like. They go to the doctor for every little thing and demand to be put on antibiotics, and then we start breeding super bacteria. If you are cutting things like raw meat and are concerned about it, just carry a couple of alcohol wipes with you; you can even push the wipes down into the handle with a stick.

My knives don't get used for food prep.

+1 on folders anyway. I do use kitchen or camping fixed blades llike on the previous page or a Mora, skeleton Izula, or BK-14 etc.. :)

Keep your folders in your pockets in the kitchen guys or :barf:

They aren't better at folding.;)
They aren't as good at fitting in your pocket.

Why not?
Yesterday I used my SmF to check if the sauages were done yet (cooked from raw out in the woods over coals).
I also used the SmF for most of the making of the skewer/spears.:)
Worked out awesome. Yum!
