Bad cut removing D-Guard

So Saturdaynight a week ago I was messing around with my FBMLE and noticed the D-Guard link was missing a washer. I decided to remove it and add the washer. While trying (with force) to remove the little piece of metal that keeps the motorcyclechain link in place, I overshot and my right index finger landed right on the edge of the blade. Now this edge is quite interesting, ie it is sharp, and my finger bled something awful. However, I was also watching a good movie, I did not feel like sitting in the ER for hours and so managed to stop the bleeding myself... but it took a while.

I really thought I'd cleaned the wound well (the knife itself was clean, but of course not sterile), but the Monday after it was throbbing so I went to the doctor, I got some antibiotics and I thought I was done with it.

Wrong.

I must have cut some tendon too, because the finger is now bent both sideways and at the first joint. I am seeing a specialist (plastic surgeon) tomorrow, and he's going to see what must be done.

I was careless removing the D-Guard (even though I do think the system is too complex) but Busse's are dangerous. At least if you're not paying proper attention and act like the damn fool I was.

Sorry, no pics. :D Just a heads-up guys, stay alert. I ususally do, but see what happens when you don't... :(

Ouch:eek:

Hope all will be OK in a few days.

But you're right you've got to be carefull playing with our favorite blades. It doesn't hurt to give a "Heads up" warning from time to time (allthough in your case it did hurt a bit I can imagine :o:):D)

i always use my leatherman to remove the master link on those d-guards.

i am sorry you hurt hurself and i hope you make a full recovery.

Might as well give me some tips. The thing still needs to come off. :)

Well now I have to know what movie you were watching. If it was Comando, totally understandable. Billy Madison... just plain reckless.

yep, I've cut myself pretty bad before, not that bad but not good. I try not to handle my knives too much. Never lose respect for such a sharp knives and you won't get cut as much... that's how I see it.
Hope you get well soon,
Dan

I had a similar incident a few months back.

If you did nick/cut a tendon the first doctor should have sent you to a specialist in the first place. The wrong care can make things worse sometimes.

Heal up and let us know how it goes.

Another good and sobering lesson.

Thanks for being willing to share. Hope your finger is returned to full duty with a minimum of muss and fuss.

Sorry about your cut, I've had lots and have a few dead spots on my fingers (slight nerve damage). I tend to wear those great form fitting gloves they sell in all hardware stores these days when working or playing with knives, especially when drinking. I know, but I like to do both : )
Stay safe.

I am usually pretty safe with knives, but I have a really bloodthirsty Vexilarus. I swear that thing bites me intentionally at least once a week. :)

Yep, had a freshly sharpened kitchen blade bite me through a Scotch-brite pad last week. I hope you get that digit back in working order soon.

Nothin' like closin out a thread with big fake BOOBS!!:thumbdn::thumbup::eek:

Real enough for me:thumbup::D

And if I had someone like that around I would either be cutting myself more from distraction - or I might not even be into knives :thumbup::D
