Hello There:

I just noticed...I have been posting here but never introduced myself (not that I am something special...:D ). Bad manners and, for them, I apologize. :(

Standard new guy who has been "stalking" this forum for like 3 months and oogling the HI website for 4 months. Found out a lot of information from you guys and want to say thanks. Hoep I continue to learn at this informal "University of Kukri Arts and Sciences".

Interested about learning about the Kukri as it is, so I have been told (I do not own one...yet) one strong knife. And heard that HI are the strongest ones with great customer support - and this forum proves that. Also interested in the Nepali Gurkhas...I am related to the "other" martial "race" of India - though not worthy of their reputation and respect (guess which one...:p ).

Anyways, enough of my babbling...back to the fray that is this Cantina!!!

ms514--Welcome to the Cantina:D I'll take a guess at the other martial "race", though it's a pretty big guess. Sikh?

--Josh

Welcome! I lurk a lot more than I contribute as well. The folks here are a great bunch and a wealth of knowledge.

Are you Sikh?

MS514 .. Welcome!
.. I am related to the "other" martial "race" of India ..
Are you a Punjabi .. and the 2nd character in your nick name (i.e. "S") represents Singh?

Hello Again:

All guesses are correct...I am a Punjabi trying to follow the path of Sikhism -a religion not so much a race (although...:D the British gave them this label and I like it). Yes...second letter is S for Singh...dang, you guys is quick!!!

P.S. Munk...That's ok...I can't tell between Boston Sox and Chicago Sox...all feet covering to me...
My Joke = :barf:

ms514,
Glad you found the place and welcome. If you have any questions, please fire away. There are many with ideas, and information. :)

Welcome MS514, I entered this cantina just two months ago and have enjoyed the experience immensly, still do. India has a number of "martial races" and I think the current Indian Army Regimental structure recognizes that. You could be Garhwali, Kumaon, Naga, Dogra, Rajput, Jat, Bihari, Assamese and several others besides Sikh. You are probably going to need to give us just a little more information in order to answer your test of our knowledge. How about a geographic location of your ethnic roots. Or, you could give us the name of your peoples traditional weapon and then let us take a go at it. This could be fun. Anyway, welcome aboard.

Dear Crooked Knife:

Wow...this game just got more complicated. Nah...answer is Sikh as my ethnics mean little to me anymore (ethnics are too complicated as is...you gotta go back up through Asia, perhaps into the Medierranean, read a few Vedas and see where the Aryans come from, find Zarashustra and ask him wherefore thine ancestors doth descend from and perhaps even make a trip to Jerusalem. Then you end up finding that ancient ancestors had dispute over copyright to fire and some spilt off and ended up being Native Americans and another group which had cave envy ended up in Europe somewhere..I ain't got that many frequent flyer miles!!!).

Thanks for the welcoming sentiments. I'll be lurking around somewhere...pestering you with questions that every new guy asks until your mouse-clicking finger starts to bleed...

:D

Welcome to the forum, Cantina, Nut House or whatever you want to call this place. I've enjoyed it a lot and hope you do too.

I never worried much about ethnics, nationalities, or colors. I think that the different kinds of people that are mambers of this forum has been good for it and hope it continues to be so. You said you had lurked for a while so you know what I'm refering to. With the mixture of folks that we have here the only thing that keeps it from being a war zone is the mutual respect we have for each other.

It has been very few in the past to my knowledge that have been invited to leave this forum But, the moderators have one heck of a job to do. I don't think I would want it.

Again welcome to the HI forum and join in whenever you have something to say or questions to ask. No one of us can probably answer all your questions but, there will be some one on the forum that can answer the question you asked.:)

Hi Guys
Welcome to our madness MS514.If a religious quetion is not out of line, I understand that one of the tennant of the Sikh religion is the carrying of a knife; is this so and if so what does it look like?
This is a general knfe question with no other agenda, if it is out of line please say so.
Regards
Phil

Welcome, ms514.

Since you sound somewhat unfamiliar with the khukuri, does that mean you do not study/practise Gatka?

Hope that isn't an offensive question to ask. I thought that Gatka used the khukuri as a domestic/agricultural tool that could replace - substitute for banned or denied weapons such as sword, etc. ?

We used to have another Sikh from the New York ( ? ) area who hasn't been around for a while ( his handle was Arvind, wasn't it, Yvsa? ).

We've had some Bando folks ( the Burma/Myanmar area martial art ) around who have a method of using the khukuri, but not someone who's been able to explain the use of the khukuri in Gatka other that what I've gleaned.

The poor general information I have on fighting with a khukuri seems to be that it was taught around the turn of the century in Indian/British Gurkha regiments. That wouldn't have been hard to do for recruits that grew up with them in their hands.

For some reason, that training seems to have been lost before or after Indian independence. It's my understanding the Indian Gorka forces don't have formal training with khuks anymore. And evidently those who've retired and returned to Nepal haven't passed the knowledge on other than about 4 basic strikes ( head, body, legs, etc. ). Of course with the British using 10 shot Lee-Enfields bolt actions, and later the FN-L1A1 into the 70's at least, there'd be less emphasis on edged weapons

Love to have you talk on the matter a bit if you are willing and able. If you aren't then you are still welcome.

By-the-way; have a preference in what we call you? ms514 seems too formal for this bunch of oddballs.

Good Point, Crooked Knife. I know a few very choice but not printable words in Hungarian, maybe even a little in Transylvanian.

One of the few printable words is "pueka", pronounced pwuuee-ka. Ben Franklin proposed it as the U.S.'s national bird, but it lost out to the eagle. It oft enjoys a place of honor at Thanksgiving.

One of these days we need to list an international glossary of blue words. All we'd need to do is ask Uncle Bill about the kami's. That would get us off to a good start - do they still use the phrase "swear like a sailor"?

P.S.: just for your edification, ms514, thread drift is not a problem on the HI forum. Thread veer is more like it.

A thread on this forum can change it's directions quicker than the Blue Angels, the Thunderbirds, and a few Pitts Specials all suddenly aware they're going to occupy the same place at the same time in about two seconds.

Mr MS514:
There are a heak of a lot of smart Khuk folks here!
If you are looking at geting a traditional Khuk...HI is the place to go. A VERY smart man shook me of the path of a Dui Chirra (new items page on the HI sight) thow it costs two arms, one leg, and you first born son....it is to my knowledge the most "traditional" Khuk going.

Welcome to the Forum!

Umm Rusty (please dont get mad at me for this)
I have never meet a living, live Goorka. But have met SEVERAL indiginus tribes from other lands. Most of these folks use a large bladed knife on a daily basis. I dont think that the Goorka ever did have "training" in the Khuk...why would they need it? Use a Khuk every day, peal taters with it, clean carrots with it, dig a latrien with it, take a sheep from grass to table...do ya realy think they had to be "trained" with it???

In my opinion knife folk have missed the boat BIG time when they talk about "training" and "reality".

Mr Jim Bowie I am pretty sure didnt have any knife training, same with Mr Jim Bridger or Mr Kit Carson or any other Mountain Man

with interest my 2 cents just made a penny ;~{)
