Bad experience. What to do?

So back in June, I sent a maker a handful of not-cheap knives to have refinished and rescaled. I've gotten one of them back a couple months later and the work was beautiful. The others, however, I have STILL not received, despite months of excuses, followed by: "I'll get em to you this week".

Essentially the guy has 700.00 worth of knives and work of mine, and I'd like to think I can do something about it.

I have made no threats of legal action against him, and at this point I'm close to calling it a loss and letting it go. It's just too frustrating to have to call him every two weeks and get more "I'll get them out this week."

Any recommendations at all?

Thanks for your time.

Something that isn't quite clear is if he is saying they are done but haven't been sent to you yet or they haven't even been started yet, and if not modified yet, have you asked for them to just be packed and shipped without the desired modifications?

It would also be helpful if we had his forum name so we don't get caught up in the same situation.

I would send him a link. If he really doesn't want his name dragged through the mud, or worse, then he will do right.

I really don't take kindly to folks who won't stand by their word. I understand extenuating circumstances, but he still needs to communicate and do what's right.

Edit:
To be honest, I would refrain from posting his name until you know for a fact that he is trying to rip you off. There are members here (God bless them) who REALLY don't take kindly to folks messing with our community, and they may take actions into their own hands if they know who the alleged culprit is.

The continued practice of shining you on with "next week" is only working because you've chosen not to take any substantive action. Don't write it off. Don't let it go. Tell him you'll be filing a police report and, assuming you sent these items by US Mail, a report with a postal inspector. Get your stuff back regardless of whether or not the work's been done.

I agree, letting it go just reinforces his behavior, for him there would be no downside to taking a customers knives for modification and just keeping them if there are no repercussions for his actions, or lack there of in this case, and he is much more likely to repeat this behavior with others in the future.

Please don't write it off ! You own the knives he does not. Just contact him and find out what he feels you owe him for the work he has already done send him a check for this with shipping. Ask for tracking. I'm just getting very tired of people doing this stuff. Try and be calm and sweet talk him until you get your knives and just let him have it

People need to know that this is really poor form and there will be a price to pay when you do this sort of thing. Good luck and go get your stuff back !

Do not let him off the hook. It will encourage him to do it to others...

Plenty of good advice in this thread...

Tell him to just send the knives back in what ever condition they are in now. I say give him a week to do it, if he can't manage that then it would be fair to assume he is either bumping you or incapable of finishing the work he is charging for and should be delt with accordingly. If you let people play games they always will.

I'm going to let him know he has ONE week to get the knives in my hand, and if that does not happen, I will be contacting his local PD. I have email records of the transactions, as well as recorded converstations.
Apparently this isn't the first time this guy has done something like this, per archives here and on other forums.

Always seems to end with the person getting there stuff back, eventually.

Keep you guys posted.
