Bad Experiences with Carrying a Tactical Folder in Your Back Pocket

There are some places that I go where I don't like to have my knife visible. In that case, stuffing it in my back pocket with a lanyard has worked quite well for a GEC 42 traditional. However I had my Emerson in my back pocket yesterday and I did not feel comfortable/safe with it there.

I am curious what peoples experiences have been like with carrying a tactical folder in their back pocket. I am mainly concerned with the blade possibly opening up and causing me some serious harm when I go to sit down. As far as safety goes, I can imagine that some knives are better than others in their back pocket and any waved Emerson may be a bad idea. Please share any good or bad experiences that you have had.

Specifically, I am having second thoughts on whether I should be putting a Super Roadhouse or Regular sized Commander in my back pocket.

If the spine of the knife is against the seam of your pocket, there should be no way it can open up.

Clipped to the back pocket or loose? If clipped, Emersons wave great from the back left pocket in a reverse grip.

Although many folks carry that way, I always carry in rh front pocket...
...but I have owned waved Emersons, and they can open at inopportune times...

I am interested in any bad experiences that people have had with their knife opening in their pocket. However to clarify, I am curious about others experiences of having an Emerson or other knife in their back pocket NOT clipped, but rather just sitting in my pocket.

I have a lot of Emersons. I wouldn't carry any of them loose in my pocket.

Do you have any good reason why or maybe some concerns about it that you can be more specific about? Weak detent? Wave snagging? Uncomfortable? ??

Back in either 2006 or 2007 with either my Emerson Commander or CQC-7BW in the back pocket of a 5.11 tactical pant it had opened itself and tore a gash in the back pocket fortunately outward. I was lucky it didn't cut me at all! Usually, it was clipped to the front pocket but I tried it that day for better access since the pistol made it cumbersome to Wave the folder out of the pocket. I don't recall for sure if in the back pocket it had come off the clip or not. Never carried a folding knife in the back pocket again! One crack is enough!

I carry my Emersons rarely in a back pocket, but I do practice waving them open in a reverse grip from my right rear pocket as my wallet is in the left rear pocket.

It works like a charm, but you have to have a clip on that side as well. All my Emersons have two clips on them, one on each side so I can carry them weak side when carrying a pistol without having to mess with swapping clips out.

Every knife I have ever lost has been out of my back pocket.
It sounds like YOU shouldn't carry a knife in your back pocket. I have been carrying either a Leathman or traditional in my back pocket for a couple years now and have never lost one.

I have carried most everything up to 6" cold steels in my back pocket and they have been problem free, my wallet is there too so that adds a barrier against accidental opening. The only thing I dont like about back pocket carry is that its easier for someone to take it and I dont like having more than one visible pocket clip on my pants, subtlety is my kind of thing when it comes to visibility/concealment but I dont really carry subtle knives:D

Deoedns what I'm doing. I've rear pocket carried on occasion I just woody about scratching leather seats and what not. Personally I just carry front pocket. Its more comfortable and natural for me.

I carried a Commander in my backpocket and had it partially open. A lot of factors come in to play (pivot screw tension, trouser material and how the pocket is placed and cut etc.). I avoid carrying any folder in my back pocket after that incident. Instead I carry appendix IWB for those deep concealment occasions.

I always carry my zt0350 clipped to my back pocket with no issues. I would carry it in my front pocket but that's where my phone lives and I don't like them scratching together. It has occurred to me that the knife has the possibility of opening because it doesn't rest on a seam but I don't worry about it too much, hopefully it never happens to me.( knock on wood )

Hello,

Try to avoid carrying ANYTHING in your back pockets.

A back pocket is a Pickpocket's dream, it is very easy for a pickpocket to remove stuff from your back pocket without you ever knowing this.

I speak from experience.

Have a nice day.

I'm concerned about the wave getting caught when I sit down or move around. It also very uncomfortable to me since the Emersons are thicker knives. If I need to be more discrete, I choose another knife with a deep carry clip.

I have a buddy who carries a Super CQC 8 in his back left pocket. Been doing it for years. Never had any trouble with it opening up back there, but then again he does keep the pivot pretty tight.

I've carried an Emerson or two back in the day like that, and even some of my ZT's when I just have too much crap in my front pockets. Thankfully I haven't experienced any trouble, either.
