Bad heat treat?

My first impression is it looks like you have some nasty decarb on that blade. I would grind it away and etch again to see if it's removed.


I've used this steel. I like it.

I removed the outside surface of the steel before HT, looks like you still have the "waffle" surface on the blade which will have decarb from when it is made.


I still need to sand my knife to a higher finish for more elegance but I dipped it straight into the ferric chloride to have a peak.

not to hijack, but are you guys having issues etching? I think I ruined my tank of fc due to the copper...now its getting a copper cloudy area on the blade...do I have to use fresh FC only for eatch etch?
 
If you are worried that the edge is so thin you might end up with bacon edge you can grind a little off of the edge to thicken it up before trying another HT
