My first impression is it looks like you have some nasty decarb on that blade. I would grind it away and etch again to see if it's removed.
I've used this steel. I like it.
I removed the outside surface of the steel before HT, looks like you still have the "waffle" surface on the blade which will have decarb from when it is made.
I still need to sand my knife to a higher finish for more elegance but I dipped it straight into the ferric chloride to have a peak.
