Bad luck bending clips

I'll give you a tip from knife making hat may help.

You mentioned ping, ping, ping, just a bit more, ping, ping ping, SNAP!

When filing a slot in a guard for the tang of a knfie, you CANNOT got file, file, file, file, a little more... file, file, and then check. It will be WAY TOO BIG! Try ping, check. Ping, check. Ping, check. This will seem like an annoyingly slow pricess, bending a spring a touch and then screwing it back on. But a half an hour of that is better than busting clips!

Except check for what? I can see that it isn't bent far enough to be what I like, but I can't tell by looking if the metal has been stressed too much and that it'll break soon.
