Bad Monkey Hollow vs. Flat

Hey guys, so I've decided to buy a Southern Grind Bad Monkey, but I can't decide if I want the Hollow grind or the conventional flat grind. I'm assuming the flat grind is probably stronger, but I could be wrong. Also is there a big difference in weight? I know this is a preference question, but I'm just curious which you guys like better, especially from you bad monkey owners.

Don't own a Bad Monkey but I do have experience with hollow and flat grind blades. Really don't think you will be able to tell that much difference in the weight flat vs hollow grind. Both are good slicing blades. As far as strength goes who knows, we all treat our tools different.

Actually if you own this knife can you please post some pics of the grind, whether it be the flat grind or the hollow. Thank you in advance.

First I've heard of them, I don't like any of the grind options. They need higher saber or full height grinds. Also seems pricey for 14C28N.

I had one of the hollow ground models and didn't even know an flat grind option existed. The knife was very nice looking and the fit and finish were great. The only theoretical let down was the blade steel, but I didn't use it enough to see how well it held an edge. The only reason I got rid of it was that I went away from large folders and this one is on the large side of the equation. Aside from the blade steel, everything else is top notch materials executed very well. They have said that the price increase was in line with what the knife should cost and that the original price was just an introductory price.

Ya I don't have a problem paying that much for the knife really. But if it had a better steel I really wouldn't mind paying it. It looks like a beautiful knife made with great materials, Except for the blade steel.

I've carried a BM almost since they came out and let me tell you, from experience, that the blade steel is not an issue. Is it a supersteel? No. But it is a perfectly adequate steel for every day use and Southern Grinds really does it well. Far too much emphesis is put on high end blade steels, most of the performance increases would not be readily noticed by most users. The BM is actually not priced high for what you get. If you haven't handled one, get one in hand and see what you think, it might just surprise you. Would it be cool if they stepped the blade steel up? Sure, but that would likely lead to a hefty price increase.

I have a full black drop point Bad Monkey. I dont know which grind it has, but it was before you could pick so whatever was standard then. The blade steel has stood to everything I have put the edge to and not so much as a roll or ding. It holds a great edge with a light strop every other day or so and moderate use. I think mine is a flat ground but I could be wrong.

They were recently raised by $75, with no warning or reason given.

A-la Benchmade, nice. I'll pass on them. I think hollow grind blades cut better than a FFG blade of the same thickness. The hollow grind will always be thinner behind the edge. For 14C28N, you can't beat a Kershaw.

Coincidentally, from their website...the answer:
Grind Options:
• Hollow Grind is thinner at the sharpened edge of the blade and great for general use.
• Conventional Flat Grind is thicker at the sharpened edge of the blade and great for general and heavy use.

Well I just pulled the trigger on this knife, I ended up getting the flat grind. Now I just can't wait for it to come in.

Hm, I didn't know about the price increase. Maybe they did it intentionally to slow things down a little. I know they have had a hell of a time making enough of them to satisfy demand. My local shop has been trying to get a dealership out of them and they told him they couldn't make enough knives to be able to. He bought several $1k worth of them at Blade and has been selling them in his shop. They are selling well. Maybe this is a sign that we will see them in shops soon. The manufacturer is generally the most expensive place to buy something.

Since I work there... I will answer.

It was to give room for people that want to sell our knives in their stores to have a profit margin.
There was ample time and posts on facebook about the price increase in advanced.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks

A valid reason, albeit rather unexplained outside of (apparently) facebook. I actually emailed the company and asked what was going on with the price, and they told me that the $175 price was an "introductory price for the launch".

Earlier, they had mentioned that it was the koozie, bracelet, and keychain that was part of some kind of special, limited time introductory offer only for those who were quick enough to snatch some of the first ones....but those still come with the knife.

Personally, I'd be far more interested in a lower price or an included tool kit, than a bunch of advertising swag.

The fact that this company supports The Southern Ground Camp that Zac Brown started. It is an amazing program, and I will gladly pay more for a knife that supports a cause like this.

hey hillbilly,
i have a ? for you and Others. I WENT TO THE SITE AND SAW THE VIDEO TOO & wondwered to myself what would make you or anyone buy the southern grind knife over an emerson BEYOND A PRICE POINT ?

i almost bit on an emerson today , but did not based on non centered blade issues. i have not heard that before on any of the emersons. I bet 5$ that the bad monkey's are centered though. but i have no clue.

oh yeah and i'll have to grab some bad monkey shirts cause they come in big boys size, are my style, and the price is right.

i look forward to your comments folks. peace
