Bad Mushrooms

I was talking about in a survival situation. Why risk getting sick when you already have things to deal with. No need to compound them by guessing wrong about which mushroom to eat if you don't know what you are looking at especially since they have no real nutritional value.

On the other hand. I eat them at home and in the woods sauteed in butter or olive oil with a small pan fried steak. Tastes great and can be a real moral booster if the weather sucks or after long times away from home.

I can't ID mushrooms worth a squat, so the only ones I eat are picked at the produce department.

There are a lot of really cool looking mushrooms, though, and I like coming across them just to see.

My mycology teacher at uni said that if it looks, smells & tastes OK then it's probably safe - but leave some next to your bed so we know what killed you

My mother has had allergic reactions to "exotic" mushrooms used as a sauce ingredient upscale restaurants. She's fine with your run of the mill grocery store mushrooms, but others that are considered a delicacy by many people have made her severely ill. Based on her experience, I'm very conservative in terms of mushroom consumption.
