EDIT: This whole big mess has been cleared up, and PI2DMP has proved to be a good guy. I feel there was simply a miscommunication between us, which was quickly sorted out.

I purchased a Hinderer Smooth CF Scale from PI2DMP here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1212284-Hinderer-Goodies-(Scales-CF-Hardware-Etc-)

After getting the scale, I thought it was a bit off. But I've never seen a Hinderer smooth CF scale up close so I just thought it was me. After checking with some friends and comparing it to a Hinderer scale, it was easy to see it was an aftermarket scale and not new as claimed.

Pics:

Thinking it was an honest mistake I contacted PI2DMP and let him know that I wanted my money back. I explained that his ad had led me to believe the scale was a Hinderer scale, not aftermarket. The following is the correspondence that followed:

Seller:

I don't know who you've spoke to or where you're getting this information, I know its not rick or his wife cause they're out of town until the first, but regardless I think you need to do some more research. And I am saying this with all due respect so I apologize if it comes across any other way but you should first know "the ranch" does't make carbon fiber scales. You can check their website to validate this. They show all their products , scales, hardware, etc. You will not find any CF scales there. ALL hinderer CF scales are made aftermarket by dealers or makers (cascadi, monkey edge, etc.). So I don't know who you spoke to at the ranch but I can assure you they would have given you the same response. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

And as for a scale being fake? I don't know exactly what you mean by that. Are you saying its not carbon fiber because I can assure you it is.

Me:

It's not a Hinderer scale, it's aftermarket. You stated in the ad that it was a Hinderer smooth CF scale. I foolishly trusted you, and was called out by another BF member when I listed it as a Hinderer scale. Yet you clearly list the scale for the Eklispe as aftermarket.

I really have no intention of going back and forth on this, and I have no intention of slamming you or badmouthing you on BF. That's why I pulled my ad and contacted you directly.

Kindly refund my money via PP gift so I don't have to pay fees (I did the same for you when I purchased) and I'll return the scale to you immediately no hard feelings and no further action. I'll eat the return shipping and count it as a lesson learned.

Regards,

His last reply:

Eric, there's several things I'm confused about. First being you contacted the ranch and they told you it was "fake". I think we both can agree that that's untrue. Both Lori and Rick are at g6 and therefor out of the office. .

Second, there are no CF scales for sale by hinderer. Check their website. All scales are secondary market as I explained, made by quality makers and dealers.

And third, I don't know what you're referring to in the wording used in my thread. It's listed as a smooth CF for a 3.5". The other is listed as a fly eye CF for an Eclipse. How is that in any way different or incorrect?

Thank you.

At this point I'm at a loss. I was a dummy and sent funds via PP Gift. I know it was stupid and it won't happen again, but I thought I was doing a solid by not forcing the seller to pay fees. Lesson learned.

So I'm out of a chunk of change. I'm retired so that's not an easy hit to take. But I blame myself for not being more cautious.

I'm posting my experience with PI2DMP as a warning to others. He misrepresented his item, then refused to make it right.

it doesnt say Hinderer in front of the cf smooth scale post? if it was an actual Hinderer wouldn't it say that?
does Hinderer even make this in their name?if not shouldn't one know that?

just asking and I surely don't know.

Hinderer did and does make carbon fiber scales, they usually are limited and sell out fast!!

weird situation. imo the seller should refund your money minus any shipping expenses. however, I highly doubt that anyone affiliated with Hinderer called it a fake. there are aftermarket scales available for these knives all over and, I assume, the seller surely just thought that any buyers/Hinderer owners would already be aware of this.

I think its wrong of you to claim misrepresentation based on the info provided here.

I was able to speak with PI2DMP over the phone. It's amazing how quickly a simple misunderstanding can get blow up when you only communicate via PM and email. After speaking with PI2DMP, the whole mess has been resolved.

I'm not sure if it's possible, but based on talking to him, I'm going to request this thread be deleted. PI2DMP was a great guy to talk to and as far as I'm concerned, GTG.

I think is is just miscommunication on many levels. Hinderer has made CF scales, I tried to buy one once for my 3.5"XM18 and missed it by a couple minutes, a very quick and simple "Google" search will reveal that the Ranch does absolutely make CF scales or did at one point. Anyone that says otherwise is grossly misinformed. Here is one of dozens of results:

As far as the refund via Paypal, you don't pay fees on a refund. Never have, never will. The problem happens only when buyers foolishly pay for an item as a "gift". Is it a gift if you have to pay for it? Unfortunately people don't protect themselves and cry foul when things like this happen.

People need to make every effort to resolve their issues privately. This forum is the "last resort", not the "first resort". Here is a link to the exchange rules:

This thread will stay as an example to others.
