I recently bought a Norton JUM4 Sharpening Stone, the 12" x 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" big crystolon stone.

The thing is barely useable, the coarse side is really soft. Worse than a coarse japanese water stone. In use the on edge leading strokes the edge digs into the coarse side of the stone and plows up a lot of grit, much like slicing a thin layer off the stone.

I've been running a putty knife along the coarse side trying to remove what might be a soft layer on the surface but it still keeps peeling off.

I've got other Norton Crystolon stones and they're all much harder than this. They abrade the blade instead of losing a layer with each swipe.

On Thursday 29th October I contacted Norton through the 'contact us' form on their website but haven't heard anything from them yet.

Has anyone else had seen this sort of thing with the new Norton stones?

It would probably be helpful if you could post a picture/s of the stone in use with the condition you describe.

Ok, here's a quick attempt at a video. Doesnt really show whats happening too well because I was holding the camera with one hand so only had one hand to use.

Before filming the video I tried lapping the stone on a tile hoping to get past the soft part with partial success. The jar shows the amount of material removed from the stone during lapping.

Norton stones have been heco en Mexico for over10 years now. It looks like your rolling the blade into the stone . Regardless that amount of material should not come off for 20 strokes. DM

I've never had a crystolon do this, but the last one I acquired was 10+ years ago.
I do have an IB6 that came in the anniversary box that does exactly as the op shows.

Several years ago when I was teaching my son how to sharpen knives, I got him a cheap stone to start on. It did the something when he used it. I can't remember if it was a Harbor Freight or Dollar store one. My son actually could put a great edge on a knife with it.

I upgraded him to an IB8 for his birthday. So far no problems with it. I have an IB8 that is still my go to stone, got it 40+ years ago.
