Bad (Too Soft) Norton Crystolon JUM4

gobbled, Great. I know the thickness will help it last longer. But do you think the extra width helps in sharpening? DM
Woops it's not any wider. It's just longer.

Been thinking of investing in a Crystolon stone lately. Is this a common occurrence?

My only issue with a Norton product ever, purchasing the coarse, medium, fine as individual stones the fine was nowhere near as fine a grade as the fine side of my combination stones.

Stick to the combination Crystalon if purchasing.

I used Norton india stones for many years doing tigger jobs when I was pistolsmithing and I still have them and they're in perfect condition but I would not buy the junk they're importing from Mexico today. It's a shame because Norton was once a fine name in abrasives. You can still find the old U.S. made stones on Ebay.

I find the longer stones quicker when making major adjustments to shape or edge of knives and tools. Having a longer uninterrupted swipe along the surface is better for ease of use too.

I went for the largest one mostly for peace of mind, I'm sure the stone will outlive me.

Heavyhanded, interesting on the difference between the combination fine versus the standalone fine. I wonder if that's why Nortons trihone, the im313 and similar uses a fine india instead of crystolon...

I've talked with many meat cutters that have a Tri- hone in their shop. They tell me they hardly use the India stone. Just the coarse and medium, then steel their knife
thru their shift . But my wife likes her kitchen knives finished on the India. DM

For what its worth, my Mexican made India and Crystalon are very good quality, no real difference from the US ones.

I have a very old India stone that has a considerably finer fine side, but am not even sure its a Norton.

Heavy, I have a early 70's Bear mfg. India stone made in NY. And it is a step finer than my hecho en Mexico Norton stone. If you resurface the Mexican stone then they get real close to the same. DM
