Bad weather - plans ruined

I have not given up hope yet...just finished loading up my pack. Just looked at the weather though it might be 1"+ of rain with thunderstorms. I live in the south and all those storms are going to go basically right over where I'm headed.

I agree with everyone, it could be a very nice time to for some introspection, reading and skill improvement.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement.

The thunderstorms would give me pause. The bottom line is you have to do what's comfortable for you.

Personally, I think I've learned more and mastered more skills camping in shite weather than on nice days....

I just don't seem to get much accomplished laying around in a hammock on a beautiful day...;)

If I didn't have to work this evening I'd be out camping. Sure it rained and snowed most of the week but it's let up a bit and should be better soon. Hope you have a great time and please bring back pictures.

Love camping and fishing in the rain. I have so much gear there is no excuse. Drinking beer under a tarp swaddled in a wool blanket by the fire.....I can handle anything!!

It seems I have more fond memories of the campouts where the weather was horible than I do of the campouts where everything went well. I'd go anyhow

I would go. You can always head home if it gets too nasty. Hopefully it won't get nasty when it's midnight...

IMO there is rarely anything like bad weather, usually just bad preparation. Tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes and some floods would be the exception. "Bad" weather is just an opportunity to practice additonal skills. Just make sure you do it safely; with the right gear, have a form of communication with you (radio/cell phone), and a detailed plan left with a responsible person as to where you are going and when they should start SAR if you don't return. I love going solo into the mountains in the dead of winter. It makes you feel so alive.

Well, I went...Turned out the weather was still pretty bad with thunderstorms and lightning. So, I turned it into a day hike. This trail basically runs along a ridge line for 5 miles. I was one of the tallest things around and with the lightning it just was not safe anymore. However, I will be going back to this trail, it was very scenic and warrants a second chance.

Here are some pics.

All in all, not to bad...just a long drive for not much outside time.
