Bad Wreck + Illegal Immigrant

= FU Citizen. Today I was driving to work. I had my dad in the truck with me. The roads were icy so we were driving slower than usual, thank God. Suddenly as we're coming over an overpass here comes this truck hauling ass. Hits an ice patch and JERKS his wheel in a panic. My dad and I watched as his truck got sideways and slid right over in front of us. No choice. Couldn't ajust with brakes or wheel and be sure I could control the truck. Looked over at my dad. He was ready. Inched to the right so the impact was on my side. BAM. Airbags deploy...keep truck straight...get stopped...whew! Dad is OK. I'm cut up and my arm is killing me. GAWDDAM illegal with no friggin insurance.:grumpy: Passenger gets out and runs. Cop shows up and doesn't care. "The ice is at fault, I'm not issuing a ticket." FUKT!!!! Wouldn't even stick around to fill out a police report, or call us a wrecker.    Other guy's truck is still barely drivable. Outcome: Me and dad freezin our asses off with no cell phone on the side of the road. Only option. Collect all valuables and hike it to the next exit. THIS SUCKS!!!!! Truck totaled. Illegal immigration is a huge problem. I felt like getting my Khuk out of the back and taking a swing at the problem myself.:grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:

Andy,

I'm glad you and your father survived.

I'm not sure what illegal immigration had to do with this situation. It seems to me that you encountered an uninsured driver and an incompetent and unprofessional LEO.

Driving without insurance is a crime in my state. (WA) If it is in the state where this occurred the officer should have cited the uninsured driver even if he was not at fault in the accident. It's also hard to fathom why the officer would fail to call for a tow or to acertain if you had any injuries.

I would recommend filing a report of the accident and also a complaint with the police department asap. They might not do any good, but then again they might. They do serve to document the incident.

Back to illegal immigrants. Red Flower read this thread with me. She says she thinks Americans like illegal immigrants. I think she's right. Why else would it be so hard to immigrate legally, and so very easy to come in to the US illegally. You almost have to be a little nutty to play by the "rules" like she and I did.

:D Mark Twain is smiling somewhere.

She has a point--a good friend of mine from Toronto had to jump through endless hoops to try and stay in Hawaii. They eventually told her she couldn't stay in the country anymore (dangerous gal--lifelong teacher of K-6 grades). Luckily this accelerated a marraige proposal that was in the works already. AFAIK she is still there and happily married. But when I think about all the people streaming across our southern border--some good, some bad--it really doesn't make sense.

Andy, glad to hear you and your dad are OK!! I'm really sorry that happened to you:(

Illegal immigration goes against basic American fairness.

If we're going to use cheap labor, let's issue cards- but NOT allow grandfathered citizenship later without additional steps. That's the catch.

Big Jim,

I appreciate your frankness and don't take offense. I've got a 401K and am planning for my retirement adequately. At least I hope I am. As an electrical engineer the recession was very hard on me. Tech companys have still not rebounded fully. Luckily I have construction skills, and was willing to work two jobs for the years we were down, and sometimes pick up shifts waiting tables at a nearby restaurant. We have savings, honestly it has been depleated by the recession years, but we are rebuilding it monthly. I am loathe to touch said moneys for the reasons you have stated. The money I've spent on HI knives would not make a dent in buying a new car, believe me. There will be a payment involved, and there must be money found in the monthly budget for that. First thing to go will be the savings.

IMHO illegal immigration has everything todo with this situation. There aren't icy conditions in Mexico. This driver had no training or experience. The officer never asked anyone for their proof of insurance or even their name. Also IMHO illegal immigrants are criminals, no better than others you could name, and should be treated suchly. Painters for instance have no chance of comepeting with illegals who will do the work for 1/3 the price. Do you think there are no Americans who would do that work. Bull Hockey! I admire you, Howard, and Red Flower for doing what you did. Don't discount it.

Thanks all for the sentiments. I am continuing the complaint process. I don't think it will help because there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I've never sued anyone, and don't want to over this. I just wish my insurance was not the one getting more expensive. Big Jim that'll cut into the car payment budget too.

The problem with illegal immigrants from Mexico is that they seldom, if ever, have a drivers license and *never* have even the most basic liability insurance, at least here in Oklahoma. I don't know about the other states but Oklahoma has an option to insure against uninsured motorists and if you're smart you will dayumed sure have it.
And if an illegal immigrant should happen to have a drivers license it is generally a forged one and not on record.
Doesn't do much good if a leo investigates and calls it in but the problem is that so many folks are trusting here and will just exchange info and go on about their way's.
If you handle an accident like that you're just asking for trouble.

Andy, I will say a prayer for you. I am glad that you were able to come out of this as well as you did. I had an illegal run into the back of my truck and push me into an itersection when he dumped his coffee on his lap.

Yes, being an illegal has something to do with all of this. The illegals don't carry auto insurance, come to California and we'll show you all about it.

Also, think that they only work for lower wages, under the table, etc...? BS. When I was a technician I worked for a huge company, they did a sweep and and 20% of our production crew dissappeared. Guess what? Lots of them that were still there bragged that their phony papers were better than the ones that got caught. They made $16 an hour, 3 weeks vacation, 1 week sick leave, and all medical+ dental +eye + orthodontist for only $60 a month. Move forward - 5 of the techs that I worked with were also illegal I found out. $25 an hour plus the same benefits. You don't think that during the tech colapse there weren't people here legally that wouldn't have killed to have that? It is a pita to come here legally, I understand because my mom and sister almost didn't make it. THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT OK THOUGH. When the rest of the country starts going through what California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona already does you'll get it.

My SIL is German. She's here legally. My brother has lots of experience with those who are not. It is trying...she's an intelligent girl with a good job record and knows better English than most Americans.

And reasonable savings- just not enough to "buy" her way into American citizenship (yes, there is a "price point" at which you can easily buy citizenship- I think it's $100,000).

John, I'm not doubting you, but Red Flower and I could not figure out a shortcut. The inept bungling and delaying by the US Dept. of Homeland Security cost us well over 100 K in lost wages. We would have gone in to debt to enable her to stay here in the US after we got married here, would have been able to spend the first years of our marriage together, and would have come out ahead financially, if we were just able to hand 100 K over to some government "expediter."

I know you guys in the south have a unique perspective on this issue and face hardships the rest of us don't.

John mentioned his brother knowing of folks in the immigrant communtiy who don't play by the rules. We do too. Many of them have sailed right by the inept Department of Homeland Security with various falsehoods and forgeries. I'm afraid the Department is buying us a false security with our tax dollars. It is particularly frustrating to see this when our own ethical standards mandate that we play by the rules.

As with the "drug war," the immigrant situation is the way it is because it serves powerful financial and political interests. There is an advantage to some interests to have a pool of inexpensive labor that cannot appeal to law enforcement to report abuses. Some people think that "Grapes of Wrath" situation was from long ago, but I suspect that there is an awful lot of it right now in this "land of the free."

It is easy to focus anger on the illegal immigarants themselves. I think this is a mistake. There are powerful engineers of this situation in this country. They speak good english, wear nice clothes, drive good cars, have auto insurance, and belong to country clubs.

The same is true of our illegal drug situation.

Uh, guys, our emporers have no clothes. (Well maybe a few Armani suits, but that's beside the point.)

Andy, the Cops don't know snow and ice in Atlanta; to cut them some slack, it probably wasn't personal, just ignorant.

Sounds like we should change "Serve and Protect" to "Swerve and Connect!"

Assume the "illegal" is Mexican. They have not the slightest idea what ice is unless it is next to the curvesa! On the road?

We have another problem with Mexican in Atlanta. In Mexico there are few roads wider than two lanes, one going and one coming. It seem like almost every day Mexicans get run over on Buford highway (six to eight lanes wide). A large Mexican population live there.

I have seen them crossing, they put their heads down and walk/run across. Somehow they remind me of possums, and remember I like possums.

I do not mean this in a racist or bigot sense. Just pointing out a fact.

I remember that icey morning this week in Atlanta. I spun out, but luckily didn't hit anyone. It was a long ride into work that day.

Fulton County police have a reputation for being not the greatest. Although I have known a few that I think highly of them. If you feel like you have the drive, then go to their office and find someone higher on the food chain. They can change things sometimes. Also, call your insurance agent, who has a vested interest in your position, and ask them if they know anyway of handling the matter. I've gotten good info in the past from my agent. Not the claims processor, but your personal agent.

good luck

Wow, that's terrible. Glad you weren't hurt badly. I can't imagine a police officer just taking off like that.

Don't feel bad about not getting his badge number - after the shock of an accident, you have to make some allowances for yourself. It was his job to support you and find out the truth of the matter, and it sounds like he just bugged out and abandoned you. I agree - you should file a complaint.

Andy, for the amount you spent on knives, you could by a car just to get around in.

I bought a 1980 Ford LTD in Yvsa's state a little more than a year ago and it has turned into my daily driver. Total cost of the car, $800, and I am sure I could have talked him down to round $600, but I was in a hurry. There is no need to spend multiple thousands of dollars on a car you need to just get around. Find a car for a couple hundred bucks, then spend what you need to to keep it running.

If that lady on the phone wouldn't talk to you, your next stop probably should be right through the door of that agency's Internal Affairs Office.>>>>>>>>> Cliff355

This good advice goes to the crux of the illegal immigration issue; IA will not want to hear about this either. IT aint worth the time to find, hold and prosecute the illegals for pissant stuff. There's no money or glory in it. No pats on the back, and the Feds won't help. It was a lot easier for the ice to be at fault than an entire open border.

I can see where a local PD doesn't want to break out their top forensics unit to catch an illegal alien.

And around here, when there's an bad snow / ice storm there are often so many fender benders that the police tell people to just exchange info except in a serious crash. But there's that term, "serious crash": I think a hit-and-run injury accident, illegal alien or no, would deserve at least a little attention.

Amen.

In this state you have to prove insurance to have a car. Somebody ran their car in the creek here and I called the police cause I didn't know them. The guy had no insurance and no clear title either. The police confiscated his car!

My friend Carol's car stalled out on the interstate. The State Police pulled up and refused to leave till the wrecker came.

We also have the "Courtesy Patrol" which are cars or trucks that are staffed with welfare to work program people who find stranded motorists, change tires, give them a gallon of gas or help them get their cars towed. It's pretty cool.

Firstly, I am no car buff, and unless it is very basic cannot competently repair a car. Secondly I've a 42 mile (each way) commute through Atlanta traffic with many a dumbass. Thirdly I've a three year old, so safety and reliability is a serious issue. Fourthly I've no time to "keep a car running" as I've a career, wife, and daughter. Fifthly its just plain WRONG for that GD illegal sumbitch to be driving a nice ass car while I'm tooling around in a beater. (Last one is just a little spiteful pride, and not too serious.)

I do appreciate the advice, but a shitbox beater is not an option. My truck was paid off too. I'm filled with a vitreous hatred of illegals right now, so please don't get offended by my blistering comments. I know you meant no harm.

Ah, Andy...

you're a sweetheart. You have no real malice, just frustration.

Santa will understand and fill your stocking.

Merry Holiday, bud.

Andy, it's not about illegals; it's about a system, a society whereby irresponsible behavior is rewarded. We know your frustration. There's no point in hating illegals; they are here because they CAN come here.

We are all in the same boat. We take the hits and keep moving. It's OK.
