Can anyone tell me how tight the 2x72 sanding belt needs to be while flat grinding. I don't really have an issue with belt tracking, but when I get to higher grits such as 320 or 400 the surface of the steel feels smooth, but I can see "micro pits" throughout the bevel. I attached a plexiglass insert on the platen and it helped slightly. Do my belts need to be tighter than I think they do? My grinder is:
BADER III
1.5HP VARIABLE SPEED

Hmmmm.

Possible deep scratch marks from previous lower grits?

What type of steel are you using, and what are your belt/grits that you use leading up to 320/400?

Mr Mfreeze can you tell me what type of steal or you using. iI dont belive your troubles have anything to do you belt tension but a plexiglass platen is no good you need glass or fire glass. Also it is commen to have what looks to be a good even finish with a low grit belt then as you move up in the grits more details of the surface in exsposed.

I said plexiglass, but was speaking in generic terms.... I bought it from Pop's Knife Supply. It might not be actual plexiglass. As far as steel that is being used:
3V
154 CM
A-2
I start with 60 grit then typically progress to 220-320-400.
Should I go with 120 in between 60 and 220?
