Badly smelling news from PhotoPoint

And I am not wringing my hands over 11 bucks or files.:D

I am saying the whole photopoint crash was handled very poorly by Pantellic and that folks have a legit right to voice complaints. (Albeit we should carry on in community). I totally agree with Chuck that you should never, ever trust any mechanical device without proper backup.

As far as investment, sometimes you win sometimes you loose sometime you take risks. A wise investor never risks what they can not afford to loose. (Been there done that and will do it again. Ya hit on some and you loose on some.)

Chuck,
What Photopoint has done is dishonorable and unethical, but I think you'll find that it's probably not illegal
I’m not going to discuss here the legality matter and I’m also not an expert in American legal issues. After I have met some reports about one “beauty” have poured hot coffee on her cleavage and won the lawsuit against restaurateur and another “beauty” have carried on infinite lawsuit against President about some more than disputable f#$%ing about 20 years ago – no offence please but I’m really not an expert in such matters.

Just to explain some things you probably have missed:
  • To sell something they should own this thing first, right? But they do not own my photos, so what way they could legally sell them, no matter me or anyone else? Perhaps software company should know this better than you and me... Is this legal or illegal?
  • They didn’t provide service what they were paid for. No matter was it small or great amount, they got the amount they have asked. Is this legal or illegal?
  • Proposition to sell me my own photos smells for me like proposition to sell someone his (her) own letters or any other private documents with clearly visible between lines mentioning to do net sell them to anyone else. Does it look like some kind of blackmailing, legal or illegal? Please note, I do not mixing publicized photo with document of strictly private contents. The common point is another – they do not have rights for both
Greatly probably you wouldn’t feel yourself so proud and happy if your allegedly expensive and reliable file hosting service would do something like PhotoPoint did. Maybe I’m pretty naive relying on cheap service but you do not seem less naive for me thinking that higher expense have to warranty you better service.

PhotoPoint never run any charitable business, I guess their so-called free image hosting was asked to get profits from advertising. It is not my business was it profitable or not. I didn’t get any profits from their business so why should I bear their costs?

Bottom line, since two years ago my body- and security guard’s license has expired I have 100% of my household from writing and photographing. But even in this situation I do not recalculate each my word or picture into money. If I would withdraw my support for someone whom I have this support promised – no matter paid or free – I would feel myself pretty badly, believe me or not...

BTW, I wouldn’t have any reservations if they would lose my images, I’m enough serious to make backup copies for all my writings and images and to keep them for long, long time, probably even somewhat longer than my life...

Well, I actually paid Photopoint for service thinking that it only made sense for them to try and turn that business into a money making proposition. I had no problem with them going to a fee based service structure. But they made a contract with me to provide a certain service at a certain cost, and they failed to deliver any service, and then tried to charge me just to get back what I already own. Sheesh...

It was suspicious enough when they disappeared after racking in as much cashola as they could, but to then send emails asking if I would be willing to spend MORE just to access to my own photos struck me kind of funny, to say the least. I laughed at the absurdity of their proposition. And I'm STILL laughing. Be serious will ya? Pay $35 dollars for files I uploaded to them? Hahahahahahha

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Anbody foolish enough to pay for the CD should realize that the high shipping fee is because they plan to ship All the CD's to the MOON. Someday...

I had a backup of most if not all of the pics I had on that site, but I did have some descriptions I may not have saved and I'm sorry for that.

As to my reply to their email...

...Well, let's just say it was "colorful". ;)

uh... they may be using ours to brighten up a dreary office :D

Sorry to all of you guys! Several years ago a few friends, and I, got this great deal on FREE storage at this guy's garage. Unfortunately, this person never mentioned that the IRS was taking an interest in his personal financial situation. I wonder who got my tools??? Gollnick may not be taking a popular position but, I bet he's right.

Photopoint or Pantellic or whoever they are ripped us off plain and simple . I paid for a year of service and I did not get that. I didn't have any of my pictures on backup and I lost alot of stuff I can't replace. Now they are trying to sell me "MY" own pictures? Come on, get a life!

Chuck, you sound like maybe you work for them :p ;)

I wish they would just let us get our pictures back and be through with it.

I asked this a few months ago and got some good replies. I haven't had time to follow it up yet, but thought this topic would be a good place to ask it again. I've been copying a lot of pictures on to my computer (and backing them up on CD). I'd also like to have them on the internet. Photopoint is out. What's around that is good? (I don't mind paying if the service is worth it.) Thanks.

My response to their E-mail was, "May you rot in Hell!"

Why not host your images on an ISP?
Besides, this might serve as a lesson to those (no one mentioned, no one implied) that do not take backups of their computers on a regular basis.

You are missing the point. We did not loose the photos we lost the links. There are still missing links all over the internet because of these guys. You cannot back that up; and, going through another ISP does not guarantee that they would not do the same thing to you.

I see this as a major credibility problem for the WWW. How much time, capital, and effort are you willing to invest now, knowing that your entire investment can vanish with an irresponsible flick of a switch?
