A few recent threads about tin box survival kits got me to thinking a bit about how small I could really go to carry the bare minimum I'd be comfortable with when walking out on a day hike. I have two larger packs (a Kelty Basalt daypack that's well equipped for most outings and a smaller Mountainsmith lumbar pack that's always in the truck). Both have shelter (Heatsheets and HD 45g garbage bags, firemaking, titanium cookpot, the usual assortment of water tabs, first aid, tools, tape, wire, etc. They also have a Ritter PSP for redundancy.

However, I had this small cordura Bagmaster holster pouch that was sitting around unused. I decided to see what I could fit in its 6" x 4.5" x 3" dimensions. Along with a Ritter PSP, it hold a Heatsheet, 45g garbage bag, quart ziplock bag, 30' of nylon cordage, two 45" shoelaces, a Buck 501, big silk 30" square) bandanna, Bic lighter, two Wetfire tinder tabs, a few MP1 H2O tabs and band-aids, Maglite Solitaire w/spare battery, 3 additional sq ft of HD foil, two large paper clips, SAK Classic (to be replaced with LM Squirt), two handwarmer packs, and a Aquimira Frontier purifier straw.

The whole thing clips onto your belt and weighs in at about 30-32 oz.

Nice kit. See how small you can make a pocket kit and carry it every day ensuring you have something when you least expect it and need it the most. Not easy to do.

I think I'd have to revert to the PSP. I don't think I can do any better than Ritter has and I don't think I'd want a hard-sided box. As this pouch is a clip-on, I suspect it could be with me always but honestly, probably won't. I work at home but when I leave, there's a bag in the truck. I did this just to see how small I could go.

Ritters kit ia a great base kit and worth the money. Basically I added a wire saw, MP1 tabs, a photon light, lifeboat matches and some drugs. Ditched the tape and instructions. You will need a hard side case if you carry it every day as the soft will wear holes in it in short order. A kit in the truck doesnt help you if you are not in the truck. Therin is the benefit of a basic mini kit and the entire reason Ritter put one to market.

I've had the bag for years so I don't recall but I think you can Google "Bagmaster" and see what they've got. This was the smallest size at the time.

skammer, understood. I always think of this stuff, at least in my situation, as going-for-a-walk gear. It's hard to imagine needing any of this stuff when going to Costco in town. ;) I have it for when I'm alone (I live in a rural part of Idaho) and in the hills. Same thing for when we're traveling in the RV. If we're going for a hike, I have gear. When we stop at Wal-Mart, not so much.

I'm sure there are many better and less expensive alternatives than the Bagmaster for a PSK. This one was designed to hold a small automatic pistol and a couple of magazines. They are priced like holsters as they are padded, etc. It's what I had on hand. I'd bought it to try carrying my little Beretta 950 BS but it was more case than needed for that little auto.

The way I look at it, everyday you can open a paper from somewhere and find someone who died or got injured that could have used a small kit to get them out of trouble possibly. They were living everyday lives and wammo TSHTF. I carry a larger kit when the risk is higher like you but never leave home without a small one. You never know.

No argument from me, Skam. I never leave home without one either but I do leave my vehicle without one when I'm in town. Of course, I do have my Victorinox Classic, chapstick, and keychain flashlight where I go!

Skam, I keep looking at Wallyworld for that plano you have to no avail. I use a Penrith Kit for my everyday carry (fits nicely in my front pants pocket) and a second kit is in my jacket pocket living in the soft-sided bag from a first-aid kit.The Ritter is the basis for a couple of my kits, but the penrith has the container which is a +1 for me.

Nice kit. I have a camo softsided pouch from Cabelas that I carry my hunting license and extra ammo, a Surefire, ceramic stick, compass, 550 and some other nick-naks. I shift my altoids kit to that pouch during hunting season. Pouches that size are very handy.

Good looking kit. Make sure to practice with it. I always suggest making a kit for carry and one for practice. Rotate out the gear that expires and replace the gear that isn't needed. Make sure you know how to use it when the chips are down.

Excellent advice! I was dragging stuff around that I didn't use or that when I went to use it, couldn't get it to work. How frustrating when I had my 2 sons asking "Dad, when is lunch?", as I tried to get a fire going. I told them to pipe down and eat some chips, can't you see dad is busy?! :D

Funny I was x-mas shopping yesterday and saw 4 of them. They are with other Plano boxes all larger, sometimes they are sold out though.

Rockywolf,

The whetstone is in a leather sheath and I got near the Buffalo river in Arkansas. It is hard Arkansas stone. The other block it a magnesium firestarter.

I just got myself for Christmas, a double diamond from Gatco in a medium grit.

My go bag is a 3 compartment 35mm camera bag. I use mine for when my wife and I go out of town. Top pocket holds my Mak9x18, 2nd pocket holds locks for hotel doors and windows and 3rd pocket holds 3 loaded mags and lock blade knife. The good thing about a camera bag is that no one looks twice at you for carrying it. As you can tell, mine is more of an urban PSK. Cuzzin Jack
