Tried asking this question over in the Axe/Tomahawk/Hatchet forum, but not much happening over there, so I thought I'd post it over here: Anybody own/have any experience with Bahco axes/hatchets. I saw my local outdoor store has them on sale, and was considering a 14" German style axe instead of ordering a Wetterlings, which was my plan until today. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it this one you are referring to : http://www.bahcostore.com/hatchets.jsp
......I have one; it sits out near the wood pile during the winter months and it does just fine. I take a round, med-course, oiled, Carborundum stone to the edge infrequently, and I can get it to slice paper. Decent hatchet; sometimes it binds up when splitting dense wood , but I just give the poll a whack with a heavy chunk of seasoned firewood and she sails right through. I find nearly all hatchets will bind when attempting to split big pieces of seasoned hardwood.

However, I think it was less than the $30 asking price the outfit I linked to is asking.

My father ownes a regular and spliting axe made by bahco,I sharpened them for him and they seem pretty solid to me.They do their job,but Im kinda undesided on the bolt on heads.

Yeah, I was looking at the standard attachment of the head, not the crazy bolt-on ones. Don't know if I trust that system; I guess I'm more of a traditionalist, or I would have bought a Gerber by now...

I was looking at these at my local sportsman's warehouse the other day and was very disappointed in them. I couldn't find a single one that had both the head on strait and the proper grain direction in the handle. Also the geometry of the head varied a lot from axe to axe. That being said I would never order one but if you can pick one out at a local store and are lucky enough to find a good one then go for it.

Bigox,
That's a shame. I figured with such a good tool as the Bahco saw under their belts, their hatchets would be pretty good too. Well, maybe worth a try for $22.50.
