Bainite vs Martensite - Which is tougher?

So how would that work if you are only going for 20% lower bainite? The other 80% is still going to be tempered martensite? Would it still have the potential plate/lathe issue?
That's a good point!

I'm currently building a couple salt pots so I appreciate the mention but would bow out of mete's generous offer.

Sure would be slick if you could quench in heated aluminum plates and maintain that temp over X time using a pid. The math could be calculated and a simple pre temp number for the plates generated. Heat the plates to X temp and then clamp X temp blade between plates. Here I go agian climbing out of the box. Would only work for certain steels though. But you could do an interrupted oil quench into heated plates which might work.

Somebody recently said that Howard quenches those swords in salt initially to make bainite and then comes back and does the edge using the torch method. Don't know if that is correct. He would not say, but he also said that the info is out there for those who are really interested. You just have to find and interpret it. I have thought about using a similar method on something like a tomahawk. Bainite body and most of the head with an edge and spike tip of tempered martensite.

Wow! I’m shocked to see my name pop up here in regards to the salt pots. What a generous offer from Mete! Thank you everyone who mentioned me. Being the proud sort of fellow I am, my initial reaction is to say it’s too much to accept that kind of offer. That is conflicted with the knowledge that would benefit everyone with the testing Larrin is doing.

If I am chosen, I would be happy to do the heat treat for all metallurgical testing going forward, whether the pots were needed or not. My only caveat is that I’m self employed, and we go through a few busy periods every year, and it might take a couple months in early spring or mid fall to get to the testing. Summer and January are the slow times in mental health.

I have no doubts that you would not accept the offer unless you could do it justice and give it your best shot. Besides, I think it should definitely go to an aspiring Martian and you're the only one I know.:D
