Balance knife review with pics.

philllll, your profile indicate your in Florida, my understanding is it rains there a lot, what do you do to your kuks to weather proof the ones with wooden handles?

I use many many coats of pure tung oil. Sometimes I start with a couple coats of tung oil mixed with mineral spirits to help with initial penetration. It takes a long time to do, but if done right the finish can penetrate up to 5mm deep. You have to let it dry for a long time between coats. The oil polymerizes as it dries and turns into a plastic-y protective coating. Smells funny but I kind of like it. It has a Hoppe's no. 9 kinda quality to it.

The biggest problem I have run into with my wood handled khuks is actually from keeping them inside all the time. The humidity can get very low in the house with the A/C running all the time. I've had a couple develop cracks from drying out. My frequent users I just leave out in the garage, so they are always acclimated to the higher humidity outside.

ah, kk thanks for the info. how do the sheaths get treated for rain use? do you keep them in a pack when going to your camp site or are they weatherproofed?
the stock sheath makes me nevous to belt wear in the rain.

Great picture, thank you for sharing

, thank you! and the kami(s) who made it:). now i have to figure out how to set it up for baldric carry, or somehow use 550 cord to make a leg strap to be able to carry it. my belt handles the weight, it just needs the floppyness reduced more. any ideas?, i have ample paracord(550 cord). also did you guys start using different kinds on handle pins? mine are two-tone, they look like metal inside with brass on outside.
