Bale on Model 112

Joe really needs to get an IPhone to take into the woods with him so he could keep up with issues on the forum.

:)

The factory most certainly DID polish it smooth.
This specimen is close to four decades old & shows much obvious wear everywhere (except inside the very-cylindrical hole!). Distortion (in the brass) is on one side, only, and is consistent with that which would have been made by a heavy gauge, stainless steel wire used for a bail. Further, the knife shows no signs of having been disassembled... -only, used hard for many years.
Obviously, I have the luxury of examining the knife, in hand; it would be ideal if we could all sit at the same table together, wouldn't it?
:)
I do appreciate the ideas, though.

I realize it's deer season so, it may be a while until Joe Houser weighs in, or responds to my email.

These blades can easily be removed, the lockbar spun out of the way, and the spring removed, then re assembled with a new pin and refinished to the point that no one could ever tell; with just a few simple tools.
I am in no way trying to be argumentative...only offering info.

I used to carry my phone while hunting, then one time when I was bow hunting bugling elk, Wilde Bill Cody kept calling me. With my phone buried in my pack, all I could do was dive into the brush and try to muffle the ringing! :)

In regards to the knife, I have seen quite a few of them just like that in warranty. Most of the time, the person drilled right through a rivet, or chewed up the spring. The fact that the spring on your knife appears to be unmarred can be explained a number of ways. 1)It possible that the guy that did it was really good.
2)The blade could have been removed and the rocker spun as someone mentioned.
3)The rocker rivet could have been removed, allowing removal of the rocker and spring. 4)It could have been done at the factory.
All of the above are possible but I must add that i consider it very unlikely that it was done at the factory. It just does not seem like something Buck would do. I have no record of such a thing being tried. Someone mentioned that the hole seems pretty large for a bail and this suggests an attempt by someone to drill a lanyard hole.
All things considered, my gut tells me this was not done at Buck.
I hope this helps.
