Used as it is, it is not worth $500.

I am officially awarding the "Are you Insane?" trophy for most outlandish purchase. Sorry, but Mr. TNO really went way over on this one, IMHO.

I wonder if, once he sobbers up, Mr. TNO will go through with the purchase.

But I just got a LCC DA with micarta handles, and I like it better than the carbon fiber...

>>$951!!! This guy must have really wanted this bali!

It takes two people to push the bid up. But there were 5 people who wanted it at around $600. When you have 5 bidders, it's usually more than a ego fight, and a much better indicator of what the same item would go for, if you were to put it or another one like it up for bid again. Thanks, JohnR7

John is exactly correct. When an auction zooms out of reasonable range, you look at the bid history and see where it turned into a two-man fight, in other words, where the majority of the market dropped out. Keep in mind, also, that in a situation like this, even educated bidders may go a little bit higher if the auction has upward momentum. So, even that point where it turned into a two-man fight is going to be above market value.

Why does such a thing happen? Well, stupidity is one possible answer. Bidders who don't know what the market value of an item is can be another. Ego is certainly an option. Other factors can come into play too such as the bidder who's motivation is "I had a knife just like that twenty years ago and that was the knife I was carrying on the night I proposed to my wife and then I lost it and I've been searching ever since for one like it and now I'll pay anything for it." Ok, fine. I'll get out of your way.

Keep thinking W!

I though I was guessing on the high side when I said $600.

I wonder how high this guy would have gone?

I have seen were a sell changed his mind and bid to keep it under a different name.
I e-mailed him about the knife and he told me the high bidder would not lose so don't waste my time.

I remember seeing an auction for a 100 year old dental tool for pulling teeth with. I would have paid maybe $25 and the bidding did start around there. It's obvious that dentists make more money now a days then they know what to do with, because the bids on that one went up to about $900.

There was a Van Gogh painting that went for around $50 million, or was it $70 million. the person who won the bid, later sold it for about half of what he had bought it for. Often the losing bidder loses interest in the item, and even if they are given a chance at a lower price then they bid, they will pass on it.

I read a book once on myths and manias. At one time in Holland, a tuilp bulb was selling for about $50, because there was a shortage and a mania. During the Beanie Baby mania here recently, they would pay up to $100 for a $6 stuffed childrens toy. Even some were reported to sell for up to $6000.

As P. T. Barnum said, No one has ever gone broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

I have no comment on the micarta price estimate.. because of two factors. Weed and Pammo13. I dunno if he was serious or some 'playa'.. I woudl have paid say 500 (max and drunk) for this knife mainly cause I have similar knives - if I didn't I woudl have paid more... but I will reserve the half a grand for a imada high hollow with inserts.

at any rate.. i am HUNGRY for a red 3000gt and a harem. SO if I sell my collection on Bladeauction will you guys jump in? I'll send out personalized invitations.

If we can believe this auction, then I face a tough decision: keep the collection or buy a five bedroom, three and a half bathroom house with a bonus room on, say, three acres. Hmmm.

Think W!
