balisong in the world !

What's the stroy behide the ballisong knife anyway?

Anyone know about the history of the knife?

I'm sure it met/meets someone's needs but it appears kind of impractical to me.

Country: Norway

Popularity: 1 (Most people know balisongs as "Batanga knives". Some people might have one purchased in the 80`s, or while on wacation in Europe. Also rumored to be available under the counter, but very very rarely.....)

Legal: NO! (Not to own or carry. Expect a fine larger than 600$ if caught. You can get a weapon collectors license, but that is the same license a person who collects submachineguns needs...... -No need to dream about getting one, unless you`re very very serious.....)

Production: No..... (None that I know of, at least...)

I would like to get into Balisongs if the situation wasn`t so bad..... If you mail order something from abroad, custom checks every single package and taxes you about 8$ to do it... 8$ plus 24% VAT......

COUNTRY: Belgium

POPULARITY: 1, I don't know anyone that flips here, but most people seem to know the "legendary illegal butterfly knife".

LEGAL: No, sadly enough they're illegal to carry, and probably to own too. I'll try to find out if it's legal to own, or if I'd need some kind of collector's license (which would be pretty sweet). I'd also like to know when they were "made" illegal, so maybe I can find some old PC's here, but I doubt that.

PRODUCTION: None, but if I can help it, there will be in the future! Belgium doesn't have many knifemakers, and no real brands to my knowledge.

* COUNTRY/STATE = Oregon, USA
* BALISONG POPULARITY = 1
* LEGAL = Yes, to manufacture, buy, sell, own, and even carry overtly
* PRODUCTION = Yes, there is one small company called, as I recall, "Benchmade" that has been known to make a few. There are several custom makers too.

This thread is great. I love this!

Nine countries and eleven states so far! What a diverse group we have.

First of all, let me congratulate all of our foreign participants on your English. You put most of us "native" speakers to shame. It really has come to my attention recently how isolated we in the US are. I have been working with a group in Israel. Their receptionist speaks Hebrew, Arabic, French, German, and English. In America, if the receptionist can speak English without saying "fur sur" at the end of every sentence, you're lucky. I am constantly embarrased by by the number of American posters how can't even form a sentence and who don't even use basic punctuation.

Also, this thread really points out the wonderful and broad appeal these unique knives have, from Indonesia to Norway, these knives are popular all over the world. This is just great.

Thank you Guillaume for starting this.

Let's keep hearing from the rest of you.

I worked in Singapore sometime back and met a fellow engineer who gave me a bali he purchased back in Thailand. It was the Stainless Stell Made in Korea skeletonized .125 thick 4" bowie blade(those real balisonger will understand. Those don't understand, well, get to our masters web and learn!

)

Singapore is a sterile country but ...

People do know about bali, but should be rated: 1
Production: OF COURSE NOT! This is Singapore lah (see the Singlish = Singaporean English)
LEGALITY: YOU WANT TO PAY THE FINE (1000s$ OR SO) GET BUSTED IN JAIL AND DO PUBLIC SERVICE FOR MONTHS ??? (again, this is the specific Singaporean reaction)

I'd like to know the situation of balisong in Japan, Korea, (Spanish speaking) South America, Africa... if you've been there and have an opinion about balisong situation there, it's welcome.

Guillaume

PS: for the US, I don't have the situation of all the states.

PS2: you can check the advance of the survey here (Excel format) : http://www.balisong.net/download/balisongInTheWorld-95.xls

COUNTRY:USA STATE:Kansas POPULARITY:1 They are available at the gun and knife shows but are the 'cheapies' most of the time. I've got one friend that had one but sold it to me and he's not really interested in obtaining another(?). LEAGALITY:NOT-The county I live in even forbids the simple possession, let alone carry, of these knives SPECIFICALLY! At various times, I've seen law enforcement officers warn and later confiscate these items at gunshows held here and in neighboring towns(they fall under laws prohibiting 'dangerous martial arts equipment'). PRODUCTION: YES! I've made a couple myself and am engaged in the making of several more at this time. FYI:A news story broke yesterday about 3 teens conspiring to do a Columbine style attack on a high school about 20 miles north of here. The police searched the offenders houses and came up with an SKS, 12 ga. shotgun, ammo, and various floor plans, bomb making plans and materials, black trench coats, Nazi flags, etc..., and various knives including what looked like a BM45 or even a BM custom! What a waste..........

ok, my turn....

State: Illinois

Popularity: I'd say 2. I have only me 3 other people that have balisongs. The place to buy one is the chinatown area in Chicago or knife shops elsewhere if you are lucky. I'd only expect to find jags but I never bother to look. All my bali's were found on the net. I have two on their way home as we speak

.

Legal: I am under the impression its an OK to own but not carry law

Production: I dont think cutlery of any type is produced here

"I see you played knifie spoonie before..."

USA, State: Virginia, Popularity: 1, if that.I looked of the state laws, nothing prohibiting owning, but if you carry any knife with a blade over three inches, it must be displayed. Mine is in sheath on my belt = no problems.

I had my favorite knife dealer order me a couple Jags. He does not sell them at the trade lot/flea market unless he gets a request. He said that even though they are perfectly legal, the town of Altivista police do like like them, and on occasion give the dealers a hard time about it. I hate stuck up cops.

A man who knows not, and knows not that he knows not is a fool, avoid him. A man who knows not, and knows that he knows not is a wise man, teach him.

Missouri, USA: Popularity: 1-2. People tend to be more curious than anything but have read too many bad stories. Hard to find any support groups due to leagality. (see section II)

Legal: He!! NO However State law okay when in permanent curio or museum. Okay, give me a few more decades and I'll start my own Balisong Museum!

Production: Private only

"Catch you on the flip side"!

Well, I obviously don't live in Japan, but I've been there and didn't see any balis down there. I know that Seto is located down there and manufactures a variey of balis.

However, I'm know the balisong is seen very negatively down there because several years back, the movies negatively displayed the knives and kids began to carry them openly. I believe the peak of tension was when students began to carry them to school and in one case, a student either threatened or killed their teacher.

After that incident, I've haven't heard much about them in Japan.

State- Illinois, chicago

Legal?-yes and no, as far as i can tell it falls under the concealed weapon heading, so, i carry it visibly in a sheath. Out of the three time a LEO has found it two of them said they had one themselves and let me off, the other one said he had one as a kid!

howsabout this....

Colorado, USA.
Popularity: I'd have to say about a 2 or 3.

Legality: legal to purchase, own, and sell. Illegal to cary-->as any "gravity knife"
same with nunchaku, shurikens, etc.
I have not seen any auto knives for sale in the state.

Production: Yes!!! I found out that Nolan Knives in Estes Park makes balis!!! I haven't seen them yet, but judging by the rest of their work, they are pretty badass.
I emailed them, and they said that they start around $300.00. Gotta get one!!!
