balisong & martial arts

Hi!

For me it's wing chun kung-fu and modern arnis, and also a mix of other related MA, but that's the main things. (have had way too little time to train lately though

Hey there!

I'm kinda like you, self taught in most any weapon. My only martial arts are 9 yars Judo, and 3 years Akido. But I am proficient in almost any weapon, "ninja style" and conventional. My paintball militia group helps with camo and stalking.

Some people develope an interest in balisongs through martial arts. I'm the other way around. But, I'm always working to decouple the two. You don't have to have the slightest interest in martial arts to become a world-class balisong artist. I don't want people who aren't interested in martial arts or who don't feel up to such an undertaking physically to be discouraged or to feel like they can't "fully belong to the club" if they don't have black belt.

A balisong is a great knife. If you want to learn to fight with it, well, that is an option. If you just want to open boxes with it or gut deer with it, well, it'll work for that too.

I actually wrote a whole essay on the subject.

HI Chuck,

thanks for the encouraging note .. I studied Southern Shaolin Boxing like 16 years ago .. for about 5 years ..

now .. without intensive training anymore, only the shadow remains

but the balisong is one thing we all love and share in this forum .. not the martial art ..

why don't call ourselves balisongers?

I'm intent on taking Aikido, put it keeps getting pushed back. Maybe this Saturday.

Sure, it's no need to be a martial artist to love balisong and to be able to handle it perfectly (Clay, you're not a Taekwondo champion? :-) ).
It's no need to be a Black Belt, it's even better not to be one :-) (BB tends to develop [over]confidence -- and a knife does not like confidence, does it?).

By the way, weapons are sometimes closely linked to MA, that's why I was curious to know about the population of "balisongers". Many weapons have been invented by martial artists.
There are many aspects that can attract people to balisong :
- history
- collection
- trading
- flipping
- fighting
- ...

Only the knife-fighting aspect can be closely linked to MA.
It's also good to have an idea of the Filipino MA styles for History/Hoplology.

Hey,
ive been doing martial arts for 6 and a half years starting in a more traditonal tae kwon do belt system then we moved to iowa in a style called hopukong housonioul (not spelled right most likely) which is a combination of judo , jeet kwon do ,karate , tae kwon do and various otherstyles of martial arts wich they let me stay at my previous belt level and i should test for my first dan in about a year.
p.s. i am 16 and am responsible and my parents buy the knifes for me , lol , there arnt to many of us out there

Well, I started with Tae Kwon Do. I didn't want to sign another contract one year and decided to move on to a Hybrid "Combat System" school which I learned a lot of great stuff at.......... like how to actually hit someone with force (as well as get hit!). Full contact fighting is da' Bomb! I hit second degree Black belt there (in case anyone is keeping score).

Then I moved, and studied Tang Soo Do for a few years (was an assistant instructor).

I've also studied traditional Akido, some Jiu Jitsu (before it was cool), and thats about it.

I've since moved again, and can't for the life of me find a place to study. Working nights severly limits the choices. Dragon style Kung Fu is my only option right now.

My son use to drive 4 hours to a school where he wanted to study. He only stayed a year or so. It was takeing him to long to work his way into the inner circle of the people there, and he was not patient enough. So he decided to go back to being a big fish in a little pond, rather than a little fish in a big pond.

I'm a martial artist and an instructor and a school owner. Actually, I've been playing around with these knives for the last few years on the side, and I just got around to joining up tonight. Howdy.
