Clay has mentioned several times about working out with his balisong to music. I've tried this too. It really helps you concentrate, and get a great rhythm going. Try to follow the timing of the song, by using different maneuvers for different parts of the song. If you can compose a "bali SONG" you can reach a new level in your proficiency and maybe even gain a new appreciation to a favorite song. I like working out to Rush, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen usually gives me a good workout too!

Does anybody else workout like this?

Oh yes. Music is great because it sort of sets the tone for your manipulation. Try some very smooth, cool jazz and see how smooth you can make your manipulation. Try some thumping rock and see how energetic you can make it. Fast music to work on speed, but slow music is great too. I often find new tricks while working with slow music. The slow music forces you to concentrate on what you're doing. Finally, music forces you to just get on with it. Instead of pausing between each move and thinking about what you just did and what you want to do next, music makes you just move on to the next thing.

Slow music is some of the hardest to work a Balisong to, because patience plays such a big part. Your technique has to be as close to perfect as you can get.

At slower speeds it's easier to lose the connection to the opposite handle, close on a finger by inserting too soon (impatience), or just "doinking" yourself in the finger throwing off the rhythm.

Quite often I think of my Balisong as a percussion instrument, and try to do "drum fill" like things. You get a whole different perspective, when you're looking at it as something other than just a knife.

I have a stupid story about practicing with weapons and listening to music. I was doing nunchuck and balisong routine when i decided to turn my stereo off. I flipped the balisong closed and extended my arm to punch the power button with the closed balisong. I woke up a few minutes later staring at my ceiling fan, contemplating life. I began to wonder how I got on the floor, when I looked in the mirror and saw a red indent the same size and shape of an octagon nunchuck. Let this be a warning to all of you music fans. Two handed weapon routines and stereos DO NOT MIX!!!
