Hey guys so I tried my first canister of ball bearing damascus. So about 2/3 of of my billet welded together sucessfully. The other section clearly didnt weld at all, like it bulged when I power hammered it. So i just hot cut that bit off and im left with about a foot of actual welded material. So the initial plan was to take it to my belt grinder and grind off the can but I quickly gave up on that idea. It took about a half an hour to get to the metal on half of one side. So im thinking I could forge it down to its semi final shape then take it to a mill and take the rest off. I cant find any machine shop that has a surface grinder so im kinda SOL. What do you guys think?

Did I you coat the inside of the canaster with anything? If you coat the inside of the can with whiteout aka liquid paper it will not weld to stuff inside. I'm surprised you got a good weld with a power hammer. I would think you would want to start with a press and slowly and gently press each side making sure it has enough time in the forge so the inside is at temp.

I would just grind it off with a 40 grit flap wheel.

Well i put a small hole at one end cus i read they can explode. When i started i gently massaged it at first, on end to the other. The section that didnt weld was at the side with the hole. I suppose on try 2 at this ill coat the insides with white out and i might be able to get the can off. I think im going to be stuck grinding this thing into oblivion. Ill pull out the angle grinder and go to town for a while on it. Its still plenty thick like +.3" or so. I can totally see a pattern when i gave it a quick etch plus the carbon steel gets rly dark when im there so i can judge how much more i need to grind.

I would not put a hole in the can. I know people do but thoes people also put WD40 in the can as well or somthing else that burns off as the can heats. If you fill the can with bearings and powder and settle it good there is very little air in the can. I was guessing the side with the hole was the side that did not weld.

Yeah man, like at the second heat i could tell what side had set, so i drew it out, hot cut, and cut my losses. Getting the can off is going to be a pain i the butt.
