Ball bearings and Dyed Curly Maple,,, a smaller one- just finished..

Here is another ball bearing and dyed maple- except this one is smaller and the wood is "bird's eye" maple. The blade is 6"+ long. The guard is stainless. This is made "canned steel" method.
 
That looks really nice. What do you mean by the "Canning steel method"?

I believe he means canister steel. You take a steel container, weld end on it, put steel powder, and bearings in it, weld shut the "lid" and heat up to forging temps in the forge.

Make a billet with a press, or hammer and anvil.

The sealing of the outer can allows a reduced oxygen environment on the inside.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!
 
Looks great. If I had to nitpick, I would have taken the plunge line down a bit and maybe shorten the ricasso a hair.
