Picked up a couple of 24 oz ball peens on sale from China Freight - beat one into a spike hawk.
I'm guessing they weigh the hammer with the handle because this thing was around 16 oz after forging. I trimmed some more weight in the clean-up , not sure what it weighs now- feels fast in the hand.
Soaked the head in vinegar to give it a patina protection from rust.
Going to park it, so the guy it will be given to for Christmas won't have to worry about rust.
I did "test" it on some harvested deer yesterday- wow, that spike penetrates skulls like butter. I enjoy the forum, looking at everyones work- figured I would chip in.

Ah man! You're doing awesome work...can we see more please :D

(nice hammer; a Hofi, no? how do you like it?)

Thanks guys, I wish there was more to show- haven't been at this long.
I did splurge and buy myself a fancy 3.7lbs "Rounding Ergonomic Hammer" from Big Blu as seen in the picture. Seems good to me - what really helped was the gas forge I built.
The edge on this hawk seems ok - have read the HF hammers are made from W2. I would probably start chopping pennies, wire and nails to test it if it wasn't so close to Christmas and have other things I want to make as gifts.

Very nice, great profile and the head fit looks perfect. Thanks for posting your work.

Best regards

Robin

That is one beautiful hawk. All elements of your design flow so well. Please keep on posting your work.

Very nice looking Hawk....Fit and finish are Great..Also like the file work

Thanks again for the comments guys.
Kentucky- yes the hammer is a Big Blu. I bought it and some tongs after I got "kissed" by a hot hawk off the anvil using a shortened sledge and flea market flat tongs. I got lucky -no permanent damage- made a strong impression though.
