Dose any one know what the steel is in made in USA
ball pain hammers. I have been forging hawks from them
and assumed that they were S5, but that don't really
jibe with the thread about S5&S7. Thy are some what
red hard but the confusing part is that thy are not
hard to grind in fact rather easy to grind and heat
treat. Gib

Hmmm, I always figured they were 01 or W1 or the like Gib.
I looked on MSC's web site and the description just said steel or carbon steel, no specifics, shoot.

Who is the maker?

Hmm, would think perhaps something like 4150. S-5 for ball pein would probably be overkill. Unless, they are real big. Its possible anyway though. 6150 comes to mind and maybe even some hypoeutectoid 10xx stuff.

Some ideas to throw around.

OF#2, Think its time to bite the bullet with these ball peins. Try emailing Wayne Goddard, I know he collects them. If you can't get his email let me know and I'll send it to you.

You want some real hawk making steel? I'll sell you some if you like. Let me know before I send you the bones...... Old Fart # 1

My bet is 1050, 4140, 0r 4340 depends on who makes em.

Dunno why you'd need that much carbon in a hammer head. lower carbon would take more impact, hence 4140.

S-7 is probably too expensive for hammer heads.

I found at least one manufacturer on the web who advertises their hammers as made from 1055 carbon steel.

I think Fox and Sweany are on the right track. I remember reading somewhere about most hammers being made with medium Carbon steels.

All the best,
Mike U.
