Band of Brothers

With all the proper disclaimers, and respect to our forum members, these brave soldiers could have taught all of us a hell of a lot in terms of mental toughness, fortitude, bushcraft, etc. And I do mean all of us.

My dad was on Omaha beach, and fought his way through the war as well, and constantly surprised me with his deep knowledge of firearms, woodcraft, and general inventiveness. I'm sure almost all of these veterans could do the same.

My biggest laugh in the movie was the quick 20 second briefing that Bull gave to a new paratrooper as to what to carry, how to carry it, and what to drop. It was a gem, being a paratrooper myself, I could appreciate it. :D

I can't imagine they slept in the same hole more than a couple of nights before they decided to improvise a roof of some kind. Like I said, I just don't think it made it into the movie.

To be honest with you, I suspect that most of the soldiers from WWII--remember that they either lived through or grew up in the Great Depression--had far superior skills to that which most of us internet bushwarriors have.

They lived this stuff. Many hunted to subsist. They improvised clothing and equipment. Frankly, what we consider a "special" set of skills was largely common knowledge (at least to those who did not grow up in the heart of an urban area).
