I will add, that there's a limit to the "bigger is better mantra", while I typically agree. I've often wished I could reclaim some of the footprint of my saw, and I've never needed the full 36" throat.![]()
Yea... I see what you did there Javan^^^ So just lemme say... YOU SUCK!!! :grumpy:
You're right...something smaller (like a 20") would probably be better for a knife maker. You and I both firmly believe in the "mass for rigidity + heavier cuts + smoother finishes" with machine tools. So maybe I let the numbers get out of control.
They had a 20" DoAll at the school that was a wonderful saw. It started off in the weld shop, but they moved it to the machine shop because some of the welding students just couldn't seem to understand you don't treat a high end bandsaw the same way you do a 9" side grinder.
I found a shop with one just like it on ebay for about $2k, but they explicitly state you MUST hire a professional rigging company with at least $2million of insurance coverage to remove it from the shop. Apparently they haven't seen what a redneck can do with a couple of endless nylon slings and a 2ton HF engine hoist!..... Or... they have.... LMAO
I did another search after I posted last night and saw the one the Salem mentioned above. It would indeed be a dream shop saw with the addition of a VFD (or so me thinks)... but I've got a lot of other things to pay for right now. :foot: :grumpy: Damn mortgage and stuff... LOL
Butch- So far so good with the Delta. Mine has the enclosed stand and the 1hp motor, so it seems to be decent. My Dad has the exact same saw in his wood working shop, so I knew it was a reliable machine. Although, I certainly wouldn't mind if it were about 3-400# heavier.
