Hey guys! So im thinking of getting a band saw to help cut out blades. I would like to hear some of your guys sugestions about what kind of band saw I should buy. Also can any band saw cut stainless steel or do you need a specail kind.

Thanks:)

I have the 9".ryobi. I've had it for a while and when I recently just starting knife making, I thought it should work. WRONG! If you get a band saw, you need the metal band saw. There is a difference. I see em on Craig's list for $100 sometimes. I just use a dewalt angle grinder and cutoff wheel. It works, I too am looking for a better, cleaner way.

I asked this same question a couple months back. The overwhelming answer I got was the HF portaband. Most people just make up a wood stand and table for it. I have yet to take the step yet, but this will be the way I go when I pull the trigger.

The Portaband is the way to go. I have the dewalt version. Its compact and very powerful and the Lennox blades last a long time. I use it for profiling G10 handles as well because G10 murders bandsaw blades. I had a big metal cutting band saw and ended up getting rid of it because I never used it.

I also have a 14in harbor freight bandsaw for wood scales and kydex but its pretty poorly made and frustrating to change blades and track. I wouldn't buy it again but it does the trick for micarta/wood/kydex.

Here's my setup with a Milwaukee, but a Harbor Freight seems to be the standard go to for this project...

Keep your eye out on your local Craigslist and you might find a nice used bandsaw. You can even use the search function on there. I found a awesome old Delta wood-metal 93" bandsaw a little while back and I only had to pay $125 for it. I had to replace the tires and do a little maintenance on it but it works good now.
