I've got a couple of pieces of bandmill saw blades and would like to use them for kitchen knives.
I know guys in the saw mills have said they make a pretty good knife but I've not found anyone who has made one themselves.
I have a gas furnace with a type k thermocouple and can hold temps to within 1° .
Any advice on how to heat treat ? I've read that some think this may be L6 ???but I have no idea .
Thanks for any input.

I got some band steel on more than one occasion, that had little or no nickle. It was probably 1070. Do a test billet to make sure you get contrast before committing to a large billet. Ask me how I know:rolleyes:

I'm in Myrtle Creek about 20 miles south of Roseburg on I5.
I'm looking for some cable . I think of all the cable I cut up as a.millwright when I worked at the nickel mine ......... Oh well this logging and saw mill country so I'll find some soon I'm sure .
Thanks for all the advice. When I made knives in the mid 80s I sent them in for HT .
This site has really inspired my return to the craft and heat treating and forging is a big part of that .

I've also had some with little to not enough nickel, but they were the smaller ones. All the 10"-12" bands I've used had good nickel content for damascus.

My brother runs a small mill with 1-1/4" bands and they are basically 1070 with no nickel. Ask me how I know.;)

The 2 I found came off a 6 and 9 inch band. .062 thick. The thicker material has all been 15n20 so far. But I will buy my 15n20 from now on, after the band material is all gone. Probably another 20 years or so:D
