Were do some of you folks get your bandsaw blades and how good are they? My Metal cutting bandsaw takes a 64 and 1/2 inch length. Also how many teeth per inch ? Thanks for any info in advance as always!

Don't have bandsaw yet(and when I do, will buy blades locally), but can probably help ya on one part. My understanding from everyone in here is that for bandsaws, how many TPI depends on whta you think you'll be cutting. The goal is supposedly to get a blade that will keep 3 teeth in contact with your stock at all times. So if you only are cutting 1/4", would only need 12 tpi. But 1/8" would need twice as many at 24tpi.

If you serach forums a bit, there's lots of threads on this already that will answer both your questions(reason I can know this, and not saying it meanly at all, is because I know at least one of threads is one I started asking about same thing. :)

The last blades I got came from www.carbide.com, I think I'm using about 10-12 teeth per inch. This was the first time I had used this company, seemed to be a decent outfit. They followed up with a phone call to check on my order.

That is the same length that I use. For sake of simplicity I buy what is on the shelf, usually 16 ot 18 TPI but always in Bi Metal, they stand up longer.

I got the 14-18 varitooth bi-metal blade for my 64 1/2" band saw. I don't bother changing blades any more. I use it to cut everything - wood, stabilized wood, carbon steel, stainless steel, brass... pins, sheet, pipe, .... I too was agonizing over the size. I took Mike Hull's suggestion, but got the varitooth. Will probably just get a 14 tooth next time.

Oh yeah, I got mine from MSCDIRECT.COM.

I'm having a tough time finding bi-metal blades in the 59 1/2" size.

Anybody have any sources?

I already checked mscdirect.com

As well as all of the usual knifemaking suppliers - koval, jantz, TKS, K&G, Sheffield, etc.

Ok - just checked carbide.com

Seems they have my size. ;)

Which is better for knifemaking? 4mm or 1/4 inch?

(my old one is 3/8" and drives me crazy - but I like that I don't have to worry about it having a mind of its own)

Thanks,

Dan

MSC is a great source of blades for anything. I use Starrett bi-metal on my saws. Love it... love it...!

Oh btw... speed and desired finish have a great deal of say in how many TPI you need. I typically use 14 TPI, but its just because I can predict the outcome of the cut better. *shrug*
