Tonight I was out in the newly cleaned wood shop. I decided to do some maintenance on the power equipment. I was taking the blade off the 12" Craftsman (1974) bandsaw, and the top wheel fell right off on the floor. The wheel pivot bushings were broken into two pieces. I don't know why this hasn't flown off while cutting, but I sure am glad it didn't, since I often cut with the front cover off ( which I know better than to do, but.....). That could have been disastrous.
Been thinking about a new Jet or Rikon anyway.
This old Craftsman doesn't owe me a dime. I would bet it has created a thousand pounds of sawdust in its 35 years of service. It is sort of like loosing an old friend, though.

Aw what a shame, I hate when an old trusty finally just gives up somehow. No chance of replacing the bearing?

The old school Sears Roebuck would gladly sell you the replacement part. Prolly not anymore. :grumpy: Maybe a you can find a machine shop to make parts...

thats how i felt when a old drill press broke down on me the shame was it was a true running, spot on machine, ...man i miss that thing,

but like a fool, i beat her, and like so many others she left me......j/k, but it did kick the bucket, so i feel your pain...andrew

Good look finding a new one that will last that long. New ones are nice, but not built to last 35 years.

Stacy! You Brute!

Craftsman is supposed to have a lifetime warranty right? Or is that only hand tools?

That sucks when a piece of machinery you're familiar with, that is paid for, and you enjoy, finally kicks the bucket.

Stacy,

I have been wondering how long my early 70s vintage 12inch Craftsman band saw would keep going. I'll take a close look at it today. You will have to agree, they don't make them like that any more. The one sitting in my shop has been in constant use since new. Amazing:eek:

Sorry to hear yours died; Glad to hear there was no collateral damage.

Have you looked into building a very able speed model?

It would be nice to have one that you could adjust for wood and metal cutting.

Fred

stacy, i might be able to make you a new part if there is enough of the broken part to get measurements from.
