I'm sorry if this has been asked, but I don't have search privledges yet.

Can you cut metal ie barstock on a standing bandsaw normally used for wood, or do you need a horizontal metal cutting bandsaw?

I assumed for the vertical type, you would need to use a metal cutting blade. Any advice is sincerely appreciated.

It can be done on some , The biggest hang up is wood saws are too fast

If anyone can suggest a saw, I would be very interested. Unfortunately I would need it to be around the $400 range.

Grizzly or Harbor Freight 4"X6" metal cutting bandsaw.
They take a little tweaking, and need good bimetal blades. Price is under $250, and they can be used vertically or horizontally.

i use a dewalt portasaw that is mounted. never had a problem with it. it even has variable speed. lots of makers seem to use this sort of set up.-marekz

I work for Grainger INdustrial Supply and have sold dozens of Milwaukee's band saws and never had a complaint.

The 4x6 Bill mentioned is the choice of many makers, including myself. It's totally within your budget and will meet your needs.

I've been looking for a bandsaw for some time and came across this one from Orchard Supply Hardware...for me I wanted the bandsaw to be battery operated so I can cut things in the field also had to be light...I got lucky that I was able to purchase the bandsaw for $119 since it was marked wrong, normal price is $169.99 The docking station I had bought previously when it was on sale...

I also mounted my Dewalt portaband and built a custom micarta table for it. Variable speed, small shop footprint (my shop is very small, so this was a big deal).

Excellent suggestions, thanks guys! I'm a huge fan of Grizzly, but not so much of Harbor Freight. Aren't all the Harbor Freight products from China?
Apparently many of the Craftsman are now too. Very sad.

The Dewalt seems worth reviewing as well. The X-Band is really cool, but I think a little too small. Something to keep in mind though. Maybe another purchase down the line.

The grizzly tools are also from China. Nothing necessarily wrong with stuff that comes out of there. Most of the Dewalt stuff I see is either from Mexico, China or Taiwan also.
