So my new Bravo-1 got a bit of a workout today...
... chopping weeds and breaking down boxes!
Sadly, that's the brunt of most of my "hard use".
Did about 8 boxes, 1 was the 4-ply ultra-stiff stuff. Most of them have been sitting around in my basement for a couple of years, picking up dust and sand.
For the first 4, she cut pretty well, hindered really only by the rather thick stock. I know, not the right tool for the job. But hey, it was my new toy. And the alternative was either a Scrapper 6 (no thanks) or a chisel-edged Emerson (even more no thanks).
The first few were a pleasure. By #5, the edge was pretty much shot to hell and I was just powering through the cardboard. Not much fun at this point.
There were some visible scratch/scoring marks and very tiny dings (less than 1/64", if even that) along the edge. Not too unexpected, given the possibility of sand and grit in the cardboard.
Tried the convex grind method -- took a sheet of 600 grit sandpaper, put it on an old CD case (pleather and cardboard, I'm assuming) with some give, and really no more than 10 strokes per side and she was up to par. 3 more strokes on a strop and back to working order.
I don't think I will ever expect it to be as sharp and grabby as something like my Ritter Grip, but definitely enough to shave that thin clay-coated magazine paper without trouble.
I did eat up about half a sheet of that 600 grit though. 20 strokes and the sandpaper is pretty as smooth as copier/printer paper.
