bark river firesteels

how are those sharp shooter sheaths i want them but havent heard much on them buy the way very very nice

I would like to add my 2 cents worth about the Sharpshooter Sheaths. I think they are first class, well made and about as good as you can get from a production sheath maker. I also think they are a cut above any other production sheath maker. (Excuse my pun) Over the last couple of years I have seen Sharpshooter sheaths go from a decent sheath maker to a top quality maker. I will only sell my school knife with a sharpshooter sheath.

Varg,

What two companion knives do you have on your sheaths?

TF

On my Bravo-1, I have a PSK.
On my Canadian Special, I have a Little Creek
On my Aurora, I have a Mikro Canadian
On my Northstar, I have a Pro Scalpel(I got it after that picture was taken)

Those sharpshooter sheaths are great. Very durable. I also have a couple of the pocket sheaths and hunter's sheaths, and they are doing very well after EDC for a couple months now.

The Bark River firesteels used to be a lot cheaper. When I ordered my Bravo1 and Micro Canadian combo last year, I was planning to get a matching BRKT firesteel. However the price had recently almost doubled and I decided that I really couldn't justify paying such a big premium over a stock firesteel on a working knife for a purely asthetic reasons. I now have a grey Primus firesteel or a red Swedish firesteel that sits in the Sharpshhoter sheath along with my black canvas micarta handles on the Bravo and Micro. So far I have been able to handle the shame of such an obvious fashion faux pas. ;)

One thing I will say is that I hate actualy using my Barkies on a firesteel, as it makes a bit of a mess of the spine of the knife. Any of you guys have this problem? Where possible I also carry a short piece of hacksaw blade with the corners ground off, which I use instead, since it saves the knives and seems to produce better sparks anyway.

Vance,

You know they do make OTHER handle material right? ;) :P

TF

Yes sir! But that's the cheapest as far as I know... I own an Aurora and Canadian Camp with that very same handle.

I am lately making my own micarta for handles so I guess I could use some leftovers and try to handle a few firesteels as soon as I get some blanks.

What size of firesteel is the loop of the Barkies fitted for?

i "think" the black canvas micarta is the cheapest.

the loop fits the large firesteel

Varg,

Of those companions - which ones (one) are your favorites?

TF

I really like the Little Creek, that I pair up with the Canadian Special. Here's a pic of the both of them with a Golok :

And here with just the CS:

What I'm really digging lately is my FT Kephart that I pair up with the Kephart Companion. No pictures of that duo yet, but I'll work on it if you want to see it.
