The problem is that there isn't just one knife that speaks to me, it's a whole bunch of them!

Well, since you posted your query in the Traditional Forum,

...let me tease you with one of my favorite Traditional Bark River knives.

Sambar Stag BRK&T Manitou

There is a new run of the similar Boone model now available.

That is stunning Big Mike.

Here are 3 of my favorite BRKT large blade patterns, the Canadian Special, Gunny Clip Point Scandi-Convex and the Bravo 1. The Scandi-Convex on the Gunny Clip-Point works quite well and it is a highly versatile knife that might check some your boxes. Mine is jimped but you can get it without and, as stated by others, you can get them in a wide variety of handle materials.

Another thing to consider is your hand size. For example, the Gunny and Ultra Light Bushcrafter are a bit too small for me to use for extended periods. Having large hands, the bigger handle of the Aurora is extremely comfortable and allows me to work for long sessions without fatigue.

Look up virtuovice on YouTube and you will have more videos on bark river than you could watch In a lifetime.

Out of the different steels they use, is there any other than A2 that aren't stainless and will patina?

Do they all come with sheaths? I don't always see it mentioned in the description.

Sorry to muddy the waters further... Have a look at Fiddleback Forge. They are knives made by Andy Roy. I've got a few Barkies which I'm pleased with and kept. A couple I moved on because the handle wasn't quite right.

Since then I've bought several Fiddlebacks and loved them all. He doesn't use exotic steel much but makes a superb knife for pretty much the same money as a Barkie. He also makes true Scandi grind knives. The link below is to his Fiddleback Friday thread where he sells his knives. You have to be quick!

Here are a couple of mine

Bushfinger

Happy hunting:)

I don't know if I should thank you or curse you for making me look at Fiddleback Forge.

More pictures of BRK, Fiddleback Forge and other knives that might fit are welcome!

They also use 3V, which will patina. I believe they all come with a nice leather sheath.

Blackjack makes the Model 125, which is the same quality as the Bark Rivers. This one in stacked leather, but they also come in stag and micarta.

I was under the impression that blackjack was a bark river line...?

They're very nice either way :)

All Bark River Knives come with a sheath, most in leather, but some models have been shipped with Kydex.

Carbon Steel? A2 tool steel is their primary steel, the main up-grade being CPM-3V. That said, other high end steels are always being tested. Also, 52100, 5160, and the less alloyed 10XX steels have been used on some models in the past.

BlackJack Knives is not a Bark River line.

Bark River is the American manufacturer for the current BlackJack owners (SMKW).

BlackJack also has some of their knives made overseas.

Bark River stands behind the knives they make for BlackJack with the same warranty they offer on their own knives.

The same is true of the Scagel branded knives they make for Derrick/KSF.

Thanks Mike, I knew there was a connection somewhere.

Take a look at the Springbok. 3.75 inch blade, about .15 thickness and just about any handle material. It's close to what you want.

This looks a touch different than the current Manitou. This appears to have a very slight nessmuk curve on the top front of the blade, vs the more drop point of the current models. Am I seeing this accurately? Great great blade shape on this one, imo

Maybe another little nudge towards the Classic Drop Point Hunter. This is my favorite Barkie. It's going to be my go to field dresser.

I’ll go out on a limb here, and say the OP has either found his knife after five years, or given up on it.
:D I would hope so. BUT, I would be interested in what choice was made and so forth. sogflash sogflash Last year, KSF had the Bobcat Hunter model made by BRKT and it would be quite a nice hunting blade. I was so tempted to buy one, but in the end, I opted not to spend the money as I have more than a couple that fill this role.

The comment earlier in the thread mentioned that SMKW owns the Blackjack trademark. Not true. Blue Ridge Knives owns it. And as mentioned, BRKT does make the classic line for Blackjack.

Dog gone. I am always a day late and a dollar short. I didn't even catch that. Good catch but it sure added to some humor and a good chuckle on my part. You're on the ball Henry.
