Barlow bargain day yesterday!

You are my idol

Seriously, that's great. I've always had a time finding old Barlows (my favorite pattern) and you've gotten all the great ones I can think of offhand right there.

my only other barlows have been a bone handled schrade with very worn blades and a mint Schrade scrimshaw raccoon with original box and papers, never sharpened. these are a good start for barlows for me. my hope is to find a Robinson.

Just a great find. There is nothing like those old Barlows for knives with character. You feel like you're holding a story.

Who did that one with the "DE" and arrow logo?

Little more info on a few. The case is red bone from looking at it through a loupe, the Ulster barlow with arrow is a model 10, the DE is made by Imperial USA and the old timer is made by Ulster and it looks like it say 10OT. The ugly yellow knife is also an Imperial USA. All other barlows made by Imperial USA, the bottom knife is a Sabre 635.

Yes it is ugly isn't it? Hideous in fact. If you pop it in the post to me I'll chuck it away for you this end:p.
any chance of another pic with it open?

could you show the blades on the toothpick or fish knife. looks like some nice celluloid handles.
i'm old enough to know this .lol
Barlows were sold out of a cardboard display box sitting on the counter in every hardware store, feed store and country grocery store around the mid-west when I was a kid, like Gambles, Western-Auto and MFA to name a few.
my father who was a school teacher even carried a Barlow to school like most male teachers did back in the day.

I will post pics of the tickler knife, the celluloid appears uncracked and solid on both sides but I have not examined real close. And I remember buying barlows back in the 70's from those card board racks. An old general store in the North Carolina mountains, Grassy Creek, old wood floors and old men playing checkers. Brings back good memories. I am from the last year of the baby boomers, lol.

Ok here are some better pictures of the Colonial Tickler. Looks like the tip broke and was reground.

Great haul, all right. I should try the thrift stores.
I think part of my fascination with Barlows is that I so seldom see a proper one with solid bolsters.
I don't remember seeing them as a kid; I always thought I'd have a stockman when I grew up.

I wonder why the old guy gave them away.

Did you say you're looking for a Robinson Barlow? Not that I have one.

I hadn't noticed in your original photo that your tickler isn't just the standard plain yellow. The dark patches scattered throughout the handle are very cool!

Hi PCL -sorry for the tardy response-I blame work:p
No never seen cel of that colour. It looks solid.
There has been shrinkage similar to a couple of old Camillus scout penknives I had.
It also appears to be a bit corroded around the exposed area of the blade. . Could that be from the cel de gassing?
Either way its a cool old toothpick:)

Thanks, only knife like it I have and it came with the lot. I think the handles are the best part of the knife, not a fan of Colonial. It will go with my other accumulation.

Doing some research on the Colonial, apparently in "Goin's" book the curved Colonial tang stamp over Providence? Is dated 1926-1938.
