Barlow vs. Sodbuster

Glad you figured this out. Yep, both.... I love the Barlow pattern and was never particularly interested in the Sodbuster pattern. I always went with a Trapper mostly due to having two blades (one to use regularly and one to keep really sharp for "special occasions".

The Madison Barlow is sort of in between the Sodbuster and regular Barlow. Hence, that may well have been a better choice and it rides very well in the pocket. I like the 4" closed length size.

Either of your choices would serve you well for an EDC.

My oldest Case Barlow (got as a kid) looked a lot like the one pictured above (by Medicvans) with the worn blades when I decided to retire it. Loved that knife. Two blade, clip and spey.

Thats funny. I have also been looking at the Madison barlow. I did kind of want a bit smaller of a knife, but this one really does look good in mammoth or bone for me. This one looks to be a good deal larger than the others though, so I think I will start with the basics...Hey, maybe I'll get one of those too.....who am I kidding, I need more money

Another question: Are there any Barlows with a sheepsfoot AND a spear point? As in, the sheepsfoot in place of the spey blade? That would be interesting, don't think I saw any like that.

And, what is the spey blade used for? Its an add blade shape, one that I am not familiar with.

Okay guys. Im really loving the Madison Barlow now. Anybody want to shed their experience with this one?

Im trying to figure out if I should go with the Madison Barlow now.....seems to be the best of both worlds for me. But, same price as buying a queen and a barlow, so thats that whole thing.

OR, if I should just take it one step at a time, and go with the barlow and the queen, and then one day the Madison..

Hard decisions here fellas.

^^^okay, not sure why I read that whole article....but thanks?....I guess?

Still trying to decide if the Madison is too large for a traditional edc, especially if also paired with a Sebby....I may just have to switch off some days though, this one is calling to me

After handling the latest Queen micarta Soddy (the handles are slab sided and not heavily radiused), and how thick the grind behind the edge is, I would get a cv case or any gec bullnose, micarta-acrylic-delrin: any would do. That tc Barlow has serious class tho!

Ok I am going to toss this out. The work you described didnt sound brutal at all and did not sound like anything that would overly test a decently made slipjoint. Since you are new to slipjoints, I would suggest getting a Barlow with two blades (something you never see on black knives).

What you may find is that you carry two knives. The Barlow always because of its pocketable size and versatility with two blades, and the Sodbuster type when hard work is afoot. A lot of us do that. And you may find that the Barlow is sufficient for most tasks you throw at it and carry the Soddie only when wearing jeans or work pants.

I am actually drooling on my keyboard looking at those pics. Those barlows are just amazing. And that electricians knife might have to be my next purchase! Thanks

Okay, so as Ive been on the hunt for a good traditional knife for my edc lately, I find that I am torn between either the
Sodbuster type knife or GEC Bullnose #71
and a nice looking barlow like the Tidioute charlow, although I am still in between a clip point or spear point for that one.

Now, I am wondering from you guys who use these all the time, what would be better suited for what type of work? I mean, this will be for me an EDC knife, but also need to do some work with it around the house, a lot of rope cutting, paracord too, and all sorts of every day work with it around the shop and the house.

So, what would you guys recommend, and for what purposes would you choose either:

Barlow clip point
Barlow spear point
GEC Bullnose/sodbuster

What Im trying to say is.....Help me spend my money again, and what would YOU pick...?

dave

I would pick both....
