Barlow-brand or type of knife? My dad saw some Barlow brand knives for sale, and remarked that he didn't know that they still made knives. I thought it was a knife type, and in any event, that it can't be the same company. Any insight?
'Barlow' refers to a knife pattern. I think it was Obidiah Barlow, of England, that this pattern was named after. A sturdy knife, sent to the original 13 colonies.
'Russell' (manufacturer) is famous for their Barlows patterns. Many good specimens around.
Levine's guide mentions three brand names for Barlows.. The last was a cheap Japanese import. Just about all current manufactorers make at least one barlow.
Barlow is considered a design rather than a manufacturer, in todays world. The style is identified by the swell end and a rather large, single bolster, which, supposedly, gives extra strength to the blades, when opened.
I am continuously learning about this "slipjoint info" so please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
