There's been the "most american pattern" thread recently (which is leaning towards barlow), and there's been all these fantastic knives from Sheffield recently (thank you smiling-knife for sharing your treasure-chest goodies with us:thumbup: ).

I just thought I'd combine the two and start up a barlow thread....
With a few from Sheffield, of course.
All new though, so don't get too exited. :D
The four first are made by Trevor Ablett. He's retired, but still going strong with his knifemaking shop in Sheffield.
Number five is a George Wostenholm IXL Barlow.

All of them in carbon steel with brass liners and rosewood handles.
Yup, I do like wooden handles. :)

Very nice knives Karl. Trevor Ablett makes nice traditional patterns. One of the the best bets in modern Sheffield knives IMO. The barlow with the sheepsfoot is very interesting. Thanks for showing those.

Thanks s-k.
I honestly don't know very much about the who's-who among the modern knifemakers in Sheffield, but I definitely like Trevors work.

Sadly, the vast majority of the old Sheffield names are no longer made by anything resembling the original company. The fate of Schrade would be a good analogy. Perhaps the two biggest of all time (Joseph Rodgers & Wostenholm) are made by something called the eggington group. However, unlike current Schrades, I believe these are still made in the UK. See http://www.eggintongroup.co.uk/ I can't comment on the quality of these recent incarnations as I do not own any. Wright & Sons and Trevor Ablett are two of a few "little mesters" carrying on the traditons. I am interested in your opinion of your I*XL Thanks.

I would say the I*XL is pretty much on par with the Trevor Ablett knives, however it's got more of an industrial feel over it, whereas Trevors knives feel like they've been made with more tender, love and caring.
Hope that makes sense to you.

VERY nice Karl......every man needs to own a few good Barlows....and those sure look as if they fit the bill. Great photo's too !

Taking knife-photos is something I still need to practice quite a bit.

......never get tired of looking at your Barlows, Amos, just as I enjoyed seeing again those fine Boker's you posted in the canoe thread.

Your Barlows are easy on the eyes, Arathol...the stag on the Bulldog Tobacco is, well, just handsome as can be !
