Barlows

Where are the modern Russell's made? I've seen some through SMKW, but don't want Chinese ones. They're about $30, and look interesting.

S & S, I've seen repros from Camillus, and from Germany.

I'm glad you mentioned the "little mesters" s-k. It gives me a chance to show off my knife by Stan Shaw! He's well into his 80's, but still tapping out a few back orders a couple of days a week. I doubt that he'll finish them in this lifetime, but he enjoys what he does. He's made commissioned knives for Queens and other VIPs, and he's one of the last of the old "little mesters". A friend of mine here in western Canada talks to him a few times a year, and has a nice collection of his work, and I jumped at the chance to own a knife from this legend. I guess I should post it in "whittlers" too!

Waynorth,
That is a really beautiful knife...awesome.

The last Russell reproductions made in the U.S.A. were made by Colonial in '98.
They are very close to custom quality, and unlike anything I've ever seen from Colonial...even though some of their very newest knives are quite nice.
Most of the others are German (Boker??), and are OK...but not up to the Colonial reproductions in quality...especially the quality of the stag.

JMO.

waynorth, that's STUNNING.
You can really tell its been made by someone who thoroughly loves what he's doing.

Interesting knife, Vince! Looks nicely made!

Every once in a while, I take a break from hunting for old knives, and look for some interesting modern ones. Here are a couple of iterations of that "American classic" the Barlow, actually made in the U.S. of A. by Case. The pearl on the small one deserves better photography! it is a brilliant rainbow of color and texture! And check out the big one's backspring!!

I'm lucky enough to own a T W Ablett: a 3" lambsfoot with double bolsters
and buffalo scales. Lambsfoot blades are not to everyones' taste but mine
is nice! I also have a George Wolstenholm Barlow (the IXL in the first post.)

The blade of the second knife, first post, is the same blade Littlemesters put
in their Army and Navy knives. Easy to sharp and will cut all day. As for Stan
Shaw, he is way out of my price range and, as the pictures show, you can
see why!
