Does anyone have experience with Barracuda electric motors. The pawn shop has two brand new stainless steel 56C motors ( a 1hp and a 2hp). They have them marked $139 and $159. I don't need stainless motors, but they sure do look sharp. Are they decent motors? It doesn't hurt to have a few spares lying around.
Thanks in Advance.

For the most part, modern motors are all OK. What is important for knifemaking is power, supply voltage, and type. 1HP and 2HP are both good power sizes. Single phase is simple, but 3 phase is able to be made VS. TEFC is what will be the most important thing.

From what I get with some checking, the Baracuda line was made by Elektrim and they are good motors. They are industrial high service rated motors for environments that will get washed down ( food industry, etc.) They appear to be very well built for a long service life.

Check the plate for voltage and type - you want single phase 115/230 or 3 phase 208/230/460 ( best )
Check that it says TEFC (which it should from my check).

Offer the pawn shop $200 for the pair.

Run a disc sander with the 1HP and a belt grinder with the 2HP.

If 3 phase, buy a 2-3HP VFD from ebay and you are ready to go for a VS disc sander and a VS belt grinder. You really want to run them on 230/2450VAC if possible.
