Barrel forging & Pattern Welding Steel - Videos & Pics

Hi Shav! The barrel is a brand new barrel made this past weekend. The set of drill bits are being made and I am working on the reamers myself. I will have photos of the Bowie later on. I have welded up one humongous blank already. Will be drilling all the "shot gun" holes in it this week. Then it's back to the forge for further flattening to change the holes into "eye balls" that appear to be small coils of wound up steel 90 degrees sideways to the flat of the blank. Ought to end up about 1/4" thick. Alan said this pattern has a name down South, but I was not familiar with it. Of course, my world ends at the fence around Corn Patch. We are hoping to overcome that little factor and check out Reno in the days to come. If this knife turns out well, I'm leaning towards a pattern welded khuk.

Oh well, can't own them all.

But we can sure try our hardest ;)

Dude lets see some pics of that 73 when you find the time.

+1 would love a proper photo tour of that when you have the time BB

Yep, I knew this was a different barrel, I was referring to the last series you showed us, to see if this one was going to be a similar situation with a attendee taking it with him and making all the bits. I am really liking the sounds of the knife. Can't wait to see if the "eye ball" follow you around the room when you have it out of the sheath :D I hear Reno is a wonderful place to visit. Have you talked with Auntie about if she would be available for a visit or are you planning on just winning a Casino or two? know anything about making Keno and Roulette wheels? Maybe you can rig something up to win win win :)

Bookie, All I can say is WOW! I am in awe of your abilities to shape metal to your will.

Hi Mopar! Ain't heard from you for ages, it seems. Subduing metal requires proper tools that fit you properly if you're going to do it properly. It helps if the tool fits you so well that it becomes an extension of your body. My hammer of choice is this 2 pound STRAIGHT peen hammer. I can flail away with any hammer in my shop, but this hammer KNOWS what it's supposed to do and so it does it all for me automatically, or so it seems. I can then just stand around and admire some of Cutie Curls' soft porn photos that Bawanna wishes he had,,,,

Here's a photo that one of them world famous Hollywood movie producers (whom I'm under contract not to reveal until all the films are out and up for sale) took of moi on the final day of filming. Look closely and you'll notice they hired Mel Gibson to be my stunt double. Mel actually owed me a favor and wanted to do for me as I did for him in Mad Max-Beyond Thunder Dome.

Continuing on with a little pattern welding project in the smithy this morning and 512 layers later. One Texas sized toe pick coming right up...in a few more days mebbe. Bawanna, best be rounding up your scale materials. This tang is right at an inch wide.

Wow, looks like that is going to be a good sized turkey carver. I bet it is really pretty too with all those layers. I do so love these show and drooool threads. :)
