Barret 50 caliber .

If you are lucky enough to have pre-ban I'm sure it has to be registered. Law enforcement is exempt. I've seen Barret's add telling California LEO's to piss off if they want theirs serviced.
The most galling thing about the ban is it being signed into law despite no evidence of it ever being used for criminal activity in the golden state!

Growing up, I was spoiled by the fact I could just step out the back door any time and shoot out past 1000 yards if I wanted to. Finally got good enough at judging drop and wind that I can honestly say I could shoot better than my rifle. Would have liked to try out a .50 to see what we could do to our "gong" at 600 yards or so.

But then again, the land around here is fairly flat, and I don't think I'd be comfortable shooting something that powerfull without a solid backstop. What is a solid backstop when it comes to these suckers?

Dad always wanted a cannon just for fun, and I have a good feeling that once my little sister is out of college, he'll be getting one. Not a little beer can mortar, but something like a 6 or 8 pound field gun. One of the neighbors has a couple guarding the front gates of his stone fortress, (as well as several more in his armory) and now and then the farmer across the road lets him lob rounds out into the field 1 1/2 miles away.

If I got rich and could afford a Barret my plan is simple and does not involve competition, so I guess that let's me off Jurrasic's serious list. Old washing machines, dryers, and autos at 1000 yards in the desert has always been my goal. I'm content with my plan and will not change it.

We have a good thick rock/shale backstop that handled the 50 just fine, but it's probalby 10-12 feet thick(never climbed over top of it to see). plus fact that it's a valley end behind it that closes in, good ozark hills, which would stop anything that missed backstop anyway.

Go down to the local refinery and get some refractory cement .Then put a three inch coating on one side of the rocky mountains . That backstop will proabably last you a box of shells ! L:O:L

Jurrasic I gotta tell ya I,m serious about the fun I have !
"Getting my rocks off?" Well maybe when I was 25 years old and still considered myself a teenager . Now I just consider it Pleasant or an enthusiasm that might mature into a passion . I tell you I do find it invigorating to bang off a few rounds and learn a new skill . I would imagine banging off a box of shells from the Barrett would be a learning experience . Including blasting the crap out of a range neighbour with the muzzle blast ! At least I woulda had enough class to feel dumb about it and try to make it up if I could .
As for the necessity of it being a Barrett ? Anything that requires adifferent type of trigger control or a different approach to trajectory interests me .
You should have seen how bad I was with a double action only Smith and Wesson 9 mm . Spray and pray ? Can you say scatter and shatter ? L:O:L

Dryers at 1000 yards make much more sense than paper at 100. Some folks out your way shoot at pop cans full of black powder....should be a lot of fun. But here again, you could shoot the Barrett, and I could shoot my much smaller rifle and still be competitive with you..and have as much fun for less effort and money. To each his own, unless you start tramping on your brother........

It's all good clean fun. It would be good times to shoot with you, Jurrassic. I think I could get you whooping a little if we blew up an old car at 1000 yards...

While we were out in Phoenix last April Dave K was nice enough to take me to an indoor range to fire some of his pistoles. :D
There was a guy there with, I think Dave said a .40 caliber jamamatic that wasn't jammin at all, but was really loud and throwing spent cases all over the place.
Even with hearing protection the damned thing was really loud!
Also seems like Dave said the guy was shooting some pretty hot loads.

All in all a very discerning experience. :(

Yvsa, I guess Dave was holding out on me! I didn't know he was into pistols. Wish I could have gone with you guys, but I had to race to Las Vegas that Sunday to meet my brother.

Dave had some cool handmade silver jewelry, including a beautiful ring with runes carved into it that I really liked, as well as that Paul Chen sword and the one and only HI Katar! He and Rio Jim seem to have drifted off the forum a bit, and I hope that is temporary.

Regards,

Norm
