"When U.S. servicemen need to penetrate a tank's armor from a mile away, they count on a weapon that evolved from the garage tinkering of a former wedding photographer . . . [-] [t]he .50-caliber rifle created by Ronnie Barrett . . . ."

Doncha just luv it?

What a joke. Perhaps the Barret would have been considered an AT rifle had it been invented BEFORE WWI, but not now.

In many cases, it cannot even be considered an anti-APC rifle.

No, the media is not biased. (sarcasm)

Have you noticed that some of the anti gun groups have targeted(pardon the pun;) ) these .50 rifles? I think it's funny. I mean I guess they do have a destructive capacity over a regular rifle I guess, but they aren't exactly something you carjack somebody with:rolleyes: Anything sensationalistic I guess. Everybody needs to put some kind of a face on the bad guy I guess.

There are armor peircing rounds in Browning fifty cal. Whether these are more desirable than a specific 20mm anti tank projectile, or a missile from another tank or aircraft, is kinda doubtfull.

If I ever get rich I'll buy a Barrett. That will not change the balance of power in North America, though.

[T]he long range weapons gained popularity after they were used to attack Iragi tanks in the 1991 war."

Hey, why let mere facts get in the way of a anti-gun rant? (Maybe it was the Tow III version of the Barrett.)

Ive read places where Handgun Control Inc. people have said that Barret BMGs are both 'rare' and 'selling like hotcakes' . Something about that just doesnt add up.

guys,

let's remember that a big part of what is classified as weapons control is the level of "scary" factor.

for example, anti bear 100% organic habenaro spray... legal, mace... illegal.

just colour it pink, add a feather boa and there you go.

by the way, just saw "American Beauty" for the first time.

i love how the absolutely non violent, misunderstood, highly sensitive and incredibly creative/artist drug dealer was portrayed vs the repressed Gay, Nazi, child abusing fascist, Gun obsessed Marine Colonel.

but i digress

Do you suppose Thompson will make a Contender with a .50 caliber BMG Barret bbl?;) :p :D
There just has to be some idiot that would attemt to fire such a thing, I shudder to think about the TC in .45-70 Govt.

I once had the opportunity to fire a Lone Eagle in .308, one-handed, with the muzzle brake removed. I think that I told the story here once before.

Long story short, I injured my hand and wrist and I don't plan on doing this again. If anyone's thinking of .50 BMG in a pistol format...well, the first beer will be on me after they're released from the hospital if they show me the vid.

I fired a .375 from an Encore about a year ago. I don't remember whether it recoiled a lot or not- good muzzle brake- but, MY GOD, was it loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It hurt my ears through hearing protection.

The anti-tank rifles were never really successful in that role*. Even with AP rounds, a .50 BMG is not going to really do much to a tank, especially a mile away!

*The US, for any that don't know, uses them to engage soft targets at extended distances, and for mine removal.

They say the muzzle brake makes shooting the big fifty like shooting a 12 gauge; but I know a lot of punishing 12 gauge loads.

The Barrett is turning out to be an anti UN Statement. Most desirable politically incorrect tool around.

As far as I know, During the first Gulf War at least one lightly armored soviet bloc personnel carrier was destroyed by a Barrett. IIRC, they shot it once with AP, and again with an Incendiary to start it on fire.

Not even close to a tank.

Of course, when have anti-gun propegandists ever concerned themselves with facts?

Based on my experience with armored vehicles, most can stand up to a .50 round. Though with repeated hits from an M2 .50 BMG it can eventually penetrate the armor and cause serious damage. But from the sniper rifle, repeated hits are time consuming. A tank would only suffer small dents but no serious damage. Although a few precision shots could disable the tracks. Basically, the only way I see a .50 Barret taking out a tank is by eliminating un-buttoned crew members.

A .50 rifle has never been used in a crime. Also, check otu this article regarding the bickerings of California to Barrett: http://www.barrettrifles.com/news/AmericanRiflemanJan-2005BrattonLetter.pdf .

That is the typical result of firing factory spec rifle rounds in a pistol - air burst of unburned propellant!!!!! Very impressive in the dark.

Was that the .375 Winchester or JDC? Both are good handgun rounds.

Or even the H&H?

Some rifle cartridges made for lever's actually make sense in single shots. 45/70. 375 Ballard. 32/20
