BAS, 15"AK, WWII 16.5" what first?

I'll have to get my 9yr old in here to stare at them with me. She will give an opinion, then go running to mom and say wild crazy things.

I casually mentioned that we "could cook" in the fireplace if needed. Next thing I know my wife is asking me, "WHAT?? your making the fireplace into a pizza oven? WHAT??"

Yes, my experience has been that children are masters of mistranslation.

Ordered the WWII 16.5 wood handle DOTD, From the 29th. It showed available, so I asked about it. Next thing I know I got an e-mail saying DONE DEAL!

That happened faster than the first time I:o .....well anyway, it was fast.

Now the 9yr old wants know. So, where is it, when is it gonna get here, How big is it, can I play with it. Can we go into the woods at the end of the street, when are we going camping again, do I have to go to school tomorrow, what other camping gear are we gonna buy, are we going to cook in the fireplace tonight? (Glwanabe slaps forehead)

hehe... prepare for HIKV :)
congrats on the wwII... pics when it arrives :) (which will be in 3-4days)

Everyone should have a BAS, they are basic goodness.:)

Thats next!!

I'am gonna put a little "daddys mad money" away and keep my eyes open.

Hey WWII and a BAS, what can I say. Once a soldier always gotta have the right playtoys!

Hmm, a nice browning shotgun or an M-14 would be NICE, as well.

lol... m43 as in the khukuri :D

OK.:D

Yea, thats nice as well, really like the curve of the blade.

Your trying to tempt me. I'am new here in this forum, but me and knives go back to when I was a kid. So far I've broken every knife I ever owned. That has not been a huge number, but still. I can be rough on a blade. Lets see if I can make this thing cry, or if I'll say uncle. From the look of it, it will last!

Geetings all, Just signed up a couple of days ago and have been reading old threads.

Ok, so I want a knife again. I want a khuk, and I want about a dozen of them.
(Wife would kill me with one of them if I did)

1. Why do I want a new knife, just because. Everybody, (well, every man) should have a good knife. I just want it, do I need a reason:D

Based on the above, let me just say, I like the cut of your jib Wanabe. Your logic is indeed compelling. Man law rules!

Regarding your first choice, I have a WWII and like it very much. I have no experience with the others you mentioned however. I understand the 15 inch AK is HI's best seller. Must be a reason for that.

Anyway, good luck and welcome to the forums.

Ok, I just got a 15" Ak from 1/28 DOTD, thanks Yangdu, gorgeous blade, and it got here fast.

15 inch 23 ounce Ang Khola by Sher. Horn handle

Impressive, now I can comment

I now have HIKV, oops, I meant to say, I' now have a 12" AK, BAS, and a 15" AK

BAS !!!

for a good general purpose knife.

I used the BAS to open the box, and after I got the AK up to room temp and the condensation off (it's about 5 right now, snowing again, and we're on the national news, the cattle are dieing at a horrific rate).

I was going to use the AK to break down the shipping box. About half way through, I grabbed the BAS. Much better suited for the task at hand.

I was surprised at how much heavier the AK felt even though it only weighs 2.6 ounces more. It's balanced forward, it'll be a better chopper, but for kitchen work or dissecting a box, the BAS worked better. The AK seems like a much larger knife.

I know, I need to give it some time and get adjusted, but for the mostly light work I do, I think the BAS will be my go to knife.

Glad my first khukuri was a BAS.

Just my $0.02

glwanabe,

16.5" WWII is an excellent choice. Congrats!!!

A few points to ponder about khuk's choice...

1) WWII - for camping, hiking, or playing in the woods.
2) BAS - Hunting (because it's lighter and you have to carry a rifle).
3) AK - a few hours of wood working.

Thanks for that Willieboy,
Now don't get me started on man law rules, I've got an opinion on that!;)

Then you had to mention JIB I've got a set of boat plans and some favorites linked that keep drawing my attention away from other work.

To quote my 9yr old daughter, "When are we gonna build the boat Dad?"

Anyway thanks for the welcome, Jeff

After having gone through a lot of old threads before I ever posted this thread, I never saw anybody say exactly this. This was my feeling of the knives as well. Being they are the top three knives, there has to be a specific place for each one as well as a common ground that they all can meet at.

Arya, nice summation. I feel very good about my decision to jump on this blade. That said I can already see that I am going to want the BAS as well. I'am thinking a BAS would also make a fine gift for my nephew who is turning 15 next month. Although this sort of thing really should come from his father. Who is a good man, just to be clear.

Welcome!

Once upon a time, I would have said "16.5 WWII" fast as an initial HI purchase, and it's still a GREAT choice (and my favorite kukuri), HOWEVER, may I humbly (and with a wee bit of experience) suggest the 15" AK as your next purchase.

Of course you can!

In reality, I'll grab a DOTD that catches my eye. If a AK comes up first, SNAGGED! If the BAS is there, DONE!

I do like that the AK is a "basically" a heavier bladed BAS, at least to my eyes at this point. I would have to go study the negative space drawings again to see the small diffs.

You may want to consider a villager (unpolished) finish on the BAS. I have found the polishing process occasionally takes away from the decorative work along the fuller on that model. Just a thought. (Or better yet, just get both versions.) :)

Yeah...I had to check with Auntie Yangdu to find out what I had, when I got it! My guess was BAS, though it was sturdier than I would have expected. :)
