So I have been interested in the difference between the 9 and 10 especially. The 9 and the 10 are nearly identical in blade length. The 10 is a little longer overall, but the 9 has more actual cutting surface due to it's useless choil. here is a picture. I just received the 9. I have had 9's in the past and sold them off, so I wanted one to compare to my 10 and 11.

You should take a picture of the cutting edges lined up from where they start near the choil.

You know what to do with that nine once you're sick of it I hope?

Yeah, I meant to take a picture like that. But did not. I may later. The OAL difference in the 9 and 10 is less than 1/4"

You've got the wrong B10 Cobalt, you need a choilless one. Much smaller ricasso, and longer edge. Though I still like my B9 more

I cannot do choilles in a 9-11 inch blade. I have always like the ability to choke up on a blade that size and without the choil it is impossible. The B9 basically is choilles as the one it has is useless. But it is acceptable as it is an oldie, lol.

In general, I tend to agree with you. But the B10, with the shape of the Basic handle and placement of the talon hole, makes choking up quite doable still. When I ordered my B10, I passed on the choiled model because I had B9s and 11s already with choils. While with the ASHBMs, I prefer the choil. It's a case by case choice for me.

makes sense. I still prefer the choil on the B10, it really does not look right to me without it.

Yes, though years ago I saw some small choil Basic 5's, 7's and/or 9's modified with a sharpened choil to make it useful for string & ferro rods. Not sure where I saw those pics back in 2009.

The B9 really is about the perfect size for balanced use and that m-infi is tough stuff. Were the large choil B9's were longer or shorter, and which came first?

You know I tried looking for my old B9 pics and found one that looks like my old B9 was a large choiler. I think I found it and it was a large choil job. As for aging it did not matter since the B9's lasted during the same time period as the straight handle series and ended in late 99 I think. But I really do not know the history of the Basic, I do know that the B9 came out and spanked the CS Trailmaster in mike Turbers tests and that was the big news in 99. In any case here is my pic of my not straight handle stuff from the past and what looks like a B9 in the left side.

jimmyjones is our Basic expert, but he hasn't been here in some time. :(

Troy, or 360joules, or whatever he calls himself now, has had many B9s. Besides the choils, there is some minor difference between smooth coat and rough coat versions, IIRC.

Eventually, I plan to pick up an asym B9 user, and dump my choilless B10LE.

What is your take on the choiles B10?

Not crazy about it. I prefer the Satin Battle Rat, almost the same size, but has a better 'feel'.

hmmm. I wonder what the diff is. The choil B10 feels well balanced but I haven't really had a chance to use it.

Basic 9 has greath bite:

Note the sort of clip point on the Basic-9, B-10 has more of a drop point (see last post for comparison).
